Page 8 — LION'S EYE — Delco Batmen Open Season With Double Header Sweep by Larry Phelan On August 29, after playing two games with Penn State-Hazelton, the Delco Baseball team headed home with a quick two wins under their belts. Penn State-Delco had swept their double- header 7-2 and 15-6. : In the first game, the complete-game pitching of Brian Marshall, who allowed two runs on five hits with one unearned run, brought him his first win of the season. In the third inning key singles by John Bruno and Bill Rankin and a RBI double by Rob Lahrman made it 5-0 and that’s all Delco needed as they won the first game 7-2. In the second game, going into the 5th, starting pitcher Bill Rankin had a comfortable lead. Then in the top of the inning Hazelton scored five times to cut the lead to 6-5. But in the bottom of the inning Delco put five more runs on the board to lead 11-5, and went on eventual- ly to win 15-6. Help came from Dennis Deitch, who hit a two run homer in the fourth, and Barry King, who went 3 for 3, all doubles, which was a school record. Keith Berry chipped in with two hits and also had four runs and four stolen bases. But real power shined through when Craig Chobor hit two home runs, one in the second inning and then again in the fourth. Penn State-Delco looked very convin- cing for the most part and hopes to con- tinue their winning ways. On September 18, at 1 p.m., Delco plays division rival and defending champ Delaware County Community College, a game which shouldn’t be missed. Also, with a total of seven home games and an attempt to steal a few away, coach Jim Kiskin said “If we win those games, we’ll be in good shape.” With the desire to avenge last year’s loss to Delaware County, the whole team thinks they have a good shot at the divi- sion. “We don’t want to be too over- confident though,” Diskin said. The Men's Team con- sists for the most part of many new faces. The only returning member from last year’s team is number one seed, Joe Hoffacker, who incidentally was also number one on Upper Darby’s team while in high school. The rest of the team consists of mostly freshmen, like Dennis Brennen, number two Penn State, number three in Conestoga, and Number one seed Joe Hoffacker shows his winning form on the tennis courts. Niebu Vuong, number three Penn State, number one West Chester Henderson. When asked, Coach Tiz Griffith spoke enthusiastically of the fall Men's team saying ‘“This is the finest group in years; the team has a lot of experience in both league and tournament play.” The team put away PSU Hazleton quickly in their first match and is confi- dent they can take care of the rest. This team has a good chance to take the league title and would appreciate a good turnout for their matches. So come out and support the team onto a league championship. : Photo by: David Rhoades FlagFootball, Tennis, Aerobics Offered For Fall Intramurals Get ready! Get set! Get involved! With only three returning players, it will be tough for the tear to repeat last year’s championship season, but head coach Alan Miller is hopeful about making the playoffs. The three returning players include Steve Benz, Pat Greer, and John Con- stantine who will provide most of the leadership and experience. There are seventeen freshman joining the team to give them new added talent. “We have a lot of depth coming off the bench, which was missing last year,” Coach Miller said. Delco’s toughest opponents should be in the games against Penn State Ogontz and Penn State Hazleton which are com- ing up at the end of this month. The team opened with a scrimmage against Widener University’s junior var- sity team. Playing on only four day’s practice, the team lost 3-0, but looks for improvement. The regular season began the week ‘Soccer Team's Playoff Chances of September 10th with away games at Haverford and Ursinus. The following weekend of the 15th the team headed to a tournament at the Penn State York ‘campus where they played at least two games. The first home game was played on Wednesday, September 19th at 4 o'clock against Swarthmore. Coach Miller and the team would like to see a lot of fan support from the students and faculty at the rest of their home games. Look for next month’s issue with stats and highlights on the games to come. Aerobics — combination of high and low impact Flag Football — sign up as a team or individual.
