Page 4 — LION’'SEYE — May, 1990 Lady Lions Post Winning Record Delco’s Womens’ Tennis team capped off a winning 4-2 season by making a strong showing at the Commonwealth campus Tournament April 22-23. Out of the six Delco seeds, four made it to the finals, an accomplishment in itself! In the finals Kathy Shane and Shanley Steeves beat all their opponents to win the First Doubles title, an out- standing achievement! : Other spots in the finals were gained by Shanley Steeves for 2nd Singles, Pam Snyder for 3rd Singles, and Pam Snyder and Maria Pardini for 2nd Doubles. In addition, Dale Robbins (5th Singles) and Mary Verano (6th Singles) represented Delco in the Tournament. Also contributing to the successful 1990 season were Monica Whelan and Gretchen Van Tassel. Together the team posted wins over PSU York, PSU Mt. Alto, and twice over PSU Hazleton. Coach Tiz Griffith noted that the team’s season record would have been even stronger if two games had not been rain- ed out. ‘They very probably would have been wins since we had beaten both of the teams 8-1 earlier in the season.” The season’s two losses were to PSU Al- toona, and PSU York. Coach Griffith added that ‘‘the season was a real achievement for the team.” And she is looking for ‘“new blood’’ next year to join the team’s only two returnees, Monica and Gretchen. Lacrosse Club by Coach John Terrell The Lacrosse Club finished its 10-0 season on Sunday, April 22, on a beauti- ful, warm, sunny day against Temple. As in all prior games, the Penn State Club won fairly easily, beating Temple 10 to 5. We did this without one of our starting midfielders, Jim Keough, our faceoff specialist, who also missed the last game because of a shoulder injury, and, for most of the second half, without Phil Green, one of our starting attack- men, who suffered an ankle injury early in the second half. The results of our recent games are: Délaware Val. Tech. Col. 5 PSU 15 Univ. of Pennsylvania 4 PSU 12 Millersville University 7 PSU: 13 Academy of New Church 7 PSU 25 Temple University 5 PSU 10 Lehigh University, which was on our schedule for Thursday, April 19, failed to show. It was later learned that they did not have enough players report for travel to this campus for the 5:30 game. = “r . NR Enjoying the Outdoors at Delco. Although their record may not show it (8-12), the team has a roster of outstand- ing individuals, each with a heart and will of the Lion they represent. The team has only two players from last year’s squad, second baseman Ed Fritz and shortstop Mark Herkert. These two sophomores not only bear the burden of the middle of the infield but they are also co-captains of the squad. Herkert was one of the top ranked short- stops in the league last year, and Fritz is carrying a .400 batting average, while playing with a broken thumb on his throwing hand. When Fritz was asked about his outlook on the remainder of the season, he replied, “I am positive about it; although on a losing streak, I believe we still have a shot at the play- offs. If we can avoid further injuries, the possibilities are there.” Rounding out the infield are Matt D’Zlonzo at third base and Brian Mar- shall and Rob Lahrman splitting the first base responsibilities. Behind the plate, Rob Russell provides a solid game as the catcher for this team. In the out- field, the defense is tremendous with Keith Berry in left field, Joe Freynik in center, and Barry King in right. A strong batting line up provides the offense for the Lions. Many of the players have already hit home runs, and Brian Marshall has broken a school Savors Undefeated Season The Delaware Valley Technical Col- lege game was played on a gloomy, over- cast, almost raining Saturday at Delaware Valley just outside of Doyles- town and was an easy win for our team. Another easy win was the Academy of New Church game. We arrived about ten minutes late after spending 30 minutes “parking’’ on I-95 south of Woodhaven exit, the exit we needed. The traffic jam was a result of a truck spilling its con- tents on 1-95. At any rate, after arriving late, we spent about five minutes warm- ing up and then proceeded to score easi- ly, with the halftime score about 12-2. The game against Penn went much bet- ter than we had expected. We had tholight that they would be our toughest opponent, but it turned out otherwise. The other games against Millersville and Temple required more work before we knew we had won the game, usually bh the end of the third quarter. Penn, Millersville, and Temple all have graduate students, as well as juniors, seniors, and outsiders who play for them, which makes our wins against them somewhat remarkable. As I wrote in the last issue of the Lion’s Eye this team is talented enough to compete in Division III, NCAA. It was an enjoyable season and not likely to be repeated for quite a while because many of our players are leaving. This will have been one of the best, if not the best, lacrosse elubs on this campus. So long to the spring 1990 lacrosse season. record with his six in one season. Barry King is carrying three. Head coach Jim Diskin must be very proud of his team. If they do not bring a title this year, then they will be in the running next year, with 90% of the team returning in the fall to put the squeeze on the league for a championship. # Player Position 1 Mark Herkert Shortstop 3 Frank Manfredi Catcher 4 Nick Vigurulo Outfield 7 Keith Berry Leftfield 9 Joe Freynik Centerfield 14 Rob Lahrman Firstbase 16 Mike Serth Firstbase 17 Joe Hoffacker Pitcher 19 Jon-Erik Dale Catcher 20 Brian Marshall Firstbase 21 Barry King Rightfield 25 Chris “Goose” Fidalgo Pitcher 27 Ed Fritz Secondbase 28 Gary Fredricks Outfield 30 Brian Verna Outfield 31 Tom Cobey Shortstop 33 Rob Russell Catcher 34 Bill Rankin Pitcher 36 Kevin Conmy Secondbase 52 Matt D’Alonzo Thirdbase 53 Jay Scally Thirdbase A Remarkable Second Year for Volleyball Team Although the members of Delco’s men’s volleyball team were disappointed with their performance and the regulations in the April 21 Commonwealth Campus Tournament at University Park, they have a season record (6-6) and their per- formance in the Intercollegiate Volleyball League Final Tournament at Villanova to be proud of. Commenting on the Commonwealth Tournament, sophomore middlehitter Frank Boardwick said, ‘By the end of the first half of the Tournament we had won four games straight. But then we got a little cocky. We got over confident and ended up in 5th place with a 5-3 record. I think we could have won first place.” Coach Robert Saba agrees, but blames the organization and refereeing at the Tournament for most of Delco’s pro- blems. “It was surprisingly disorganiz- ed,” he said. “Some teams showed up late or not at all. Mistakes were made in the score keeping. Our team was frustrated because we had high hopes of playing in the tournament finals. In the end, the team who won the tournament was one we had beaten earlier in the day.” The Villanova Tournament was another story. In a field of 11 teams primarily from four-year schools, Delco’s team came in fourth. “It was a Thece's no wo I can be read Hat T Ain T Know on uwoy y For IZ, Hmm +’ ND CLAaS TEDRAY-] 7 BOMB ie i DARE, @ fe ————— great achievement,” said Coach Saba. “We even beat LaSalle who had beaten us during the regular season. Villanova won the tournament, and if we hadn’t had to face them in the first round of the finals, we probably would have done even better.” The only sure returnee for next year is freshman setter Rob Malloy who was named MVP for the season and to the All-Tournament Team at Villanova. The rest of the team are sophomores: team captain Fran Wolff and Mike Ponto, who were sidehitters, middlebacks Jim Whitehill, Al Sorokin, and Mike Pelligrino, middle hitters Steve Taylor, Steve Hunter, and Frank Boardwick, and setter Morris Redding. Making significant contributions to the team’s tournament play outside the regular season were Dan Fisher and Tom Pagnini. “There are a lot of things to be proud of in this team,” added Coach Saba.
