PENNSIATE ® THELION'SEY J Vol. XXI, No. 7 Penn State University, Delaware County Campus April, 1990 New SGA Officers Urge Unity, Involvement The Student Government Associa- tion's four newly-elected officers are anxious to be installed and to continue guiding Delco into the new decade. Recently elected were President: Chuck McCarthy; Vice President: Rich Schaef- fer; Secretary: Jill Rhodes; and Treasurer: Michelle Walsh. All are cur- rently second semester freshmen. Having campaigned as a four-member slate, all of the new officers support a three-point agenda for next year. Their priorities for the campus will be 1) club unity, 2) increased student involvement, and 3) serving as advocates for all students on campus. : And the team has already started to work. “We are meeting on almost a daily basis to prepare for next year,” explain- ed Chuck. “We want to be operative on the first day of school in August.” The four also give credit to the cur- rent SGA officers, Marnie Hollis, Cyndie Kugelman, John Palka, and recently- appointed Fran Stedeford and Fran Feindt, for the work they have done. “This year’s officers have layed the groundwork in a number of areas,” Chuck acknowledged, ‘‘including the renovation of the Lion’s Den.” : A graduate of St. James High School, Chuck McCarthy President Delco Establishes McShane Fund by Fran Stedeford Last semester a fellow student, Phillip McShane, was seriously injured in a car accident in Lancaster. He was left paralyzed from the chest down. The friend that he was with was not so lucky; she was killed in the accident. The medical costs resulting from the accident have been astronomical to the family. Not only do they have to pay for the medical expenses but also for a motel room in Lancaster to be near their son. - On April 11, 12, and 13, student clubs and organizations, faculty, and staff will be sponsoring: a bake sale to benefit Phillip McShane. The Bake Sale will be - held in the student lounge, main ~ building, beginning at 11:30. During his freshman year at Penn State as an education major, he has been involved in SGA, has served as a student member of the Campus Enhancement Fund Committee and Staff Search Committees, and has been a member of the Lion’s Eye staff, serv- ing as the Editor-in-Chief during second semester. Rich Schaeffer, Vice President-elect, is a graduate of Garnet Valley High School and is currently majoring in political science at Delco. Rich is a member of the campus ROTC and serves as a “horseman.” He also is active in the Ranger Club. New SGA Secretary, Jill Rhodes, is a graduate of Notre Dame Academy, ma- joring in art at PSU. Franz, assistant professor of history, has received a top University- wide award honoring him for his many contributions as a teacher, advisor and faculty leader. Franz was one of four pro- fessors from the Commonwealth Educa- tional System to win the George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching. : Dr. Franz, who has been teaching at Delco since 1968, has a long list of achievements-as an academic and com- ‘munity leader and last year was named the Teacher of the Year at Delco. Dr. Ed Tomezsko, called Franz a “master teacher, deserving of the many accolades he routinely receives from peers and students.” Tomezsko said that among the many qualities which distingusish Franz as a master teacher “is his uncanny ability to engage his students in the learning process without compromise to academic integrity or to the setting of high expectations.” _ Dr. Franz teaches standard American ‘History courses and also has developed special courses at the campus in the Philadelphia colonial history and Penn- ‘sylvania colonial history. Jill Rhodes Secretary the Lion’s Eye and also has been a staff reporter. In addition, Jill recently took over the editorship of the campus news bulletin, What’s Happening. Treasurer-elect Michelle Walsh graduated from Archbishop Prender- gast High School. She is a liberal arts major here at Delco. All four newly-elected officers are anx- ious to make 1990-1991 an outstanding year for PSU Delco. Awards Ceremony Set by Jennifer Darr Numerous awards will be given out to students on the 16th of April at the Twenty-third Annual Student Awards Ceremony. The awards are being presented to students who have done something outstanding for their club or organization. Clubs and organizations handing out awards are: The Lion’s Eye Students Activities Commission, Black Student League, Camera Club, Cheer- leading Club, Engineering Technology Club, French Club, Lacrosse Club, Nit- tany Christian Fellowship, Keystone Society, Rangers, Rifle Club, Student Health Club, Army ROTC, Campus Am- bassadors, SADD, and the SGA. The club advisors, the President, or the Vice President of the club will be presenting the awards. The event will be ‘held in room 101 Main during the Com- mons Hour, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 P.M.
