p 4 THE LION'S EYE September-October, 1988 Political talk In defence of Dan Quayle by Christopher GChopelevich Political Editor Let me start out by saying that I am a conservative and very proud of it. I am disturbed by the unfair coverage by the liberal press of Dan Quayle. This is an- other attempt by the liberal press to sidetrack Bush’s cam- paign, an at- tempt that has failed. Voters elect a president and not a Vice- President. Let's take a look at the rumors, since that is all that they - are. No evidence has been pre- sented by the liberal press. The liberal press would like us to believe that Dan Quayle used family influence to get into the United States National Guard. The liberals reason that since Mr. Quayle is rich the way he got in was to use influence. Two weeks ago the Pentagon released files that show there were openings before and after Quayle enlisted, a fact that the liberal press spent little time on. These files show ~ that there was no need for family influence. A liberal press has tried to portray a call home for advice as ‘a call for influence. Let the record ~ show that there was one call made for Quayle and that was by a fam- card or flee to Canada. Student Government Association for 1988-89 Academic year. ily friend as a reference call to the Guard commander. I challenge you to watch the news (especially channel 10) and see them bring up the same question about the “in- fluence” a question that has been answered. The media is doing a service to us all by not reporting the facts that can be substantiated: as hard facts. Should we condemn Quayle because he was lucky enough to live in a state with guard openings? Isay NO! There is no shame in enlisting in the guard. The people who are criticiz- ing him today are the same ones who urged dodgers to burn the flag, burn their draft card, or flee to Canada. I am proud to say that Dan did not burn the flag, his draft As an American I am proud of Dan for his service. Where is the outcry that Senator Bentsen got his son in the Guard and an officers’ commission? A fact the liberal press will not comment on. Tom Marr of WWDB calls Dukakis “The Duke of Deception.” The press has not questioned “Dukaxes” military record in Ko- rea. The Duke of Deception took a four-year student deferment and then he enlisted after the peace treaty was signed. Quayle had a chance of being sent into combat action where as Dukakis sat and waited for peace. Sorry Mike but don’t even try to paint Dan as a Left to right (top): Robert Knewsiub (Secretary), Andy Hilt (President), Richard Gallo (Treasurer) Left to right (bottom): Basia Sobezynski (Vics President), and Chris Clay (Corre- sponding Secretary). SGA by Robert Knewstub SGA Secretary One day I was sitting in the Stu- dent Government Office with my fellow officers kicking the cob- webs around and blowing dust off the furniture . As everybody else was sitting and discussing plans for the upcoming year, I looked around the room and I asked myself why the place felt soempty. I thought for a few seconds, and the first thing that popped into my dodger since he went in when hos- tilities were at their highest. The liberal press is so bent on destroying Dan that they will report rumors that have no foun- dation. It bothers me that the liberal press can destroy a man’s reputation and get away with it. I am talking about Paula Parkin- son. She claims to have been propositioned by Dan for sex. Former Representative Evans (R- Del.) said her claims were, “asburd and untrue and only doing it for the money.” The press should know by now what to re- port as fact and what as fantasy. I shouldn’t have to remind you that it was a Democrat, Gary Hart, who brought up this issue. Talk about ethics. Let’s mention the attack video on Biden, released by Dukakis. The Duke of Deception has just rehired the man who made the tape, John Sasso. Last September Dukakis said, “He will not be back.” Could it be the fact Dukakis has lost a 17 point lead. It seems to me that the more people know the less they like him. The liberal press and the midgetman for Taxachussetts questions Quayle’s age experi- ence. I find it quite amusing that the press tries to portray the Duke of Deception as a new John F. Kennedy. Lets talk facts. head was posters. We're missing posters. No... No...we have enough of those. I continued to ponder on about this empty room. “Ahal,” I thought out loud. “We're missing students.” Where are those countless bodies of people ~ who have ideas, concerns, and interests and want to be heard by the Student Government? What is a Student Goverment without supporters and problems to deal with? Now, I realized, we have a problem. I must set out on a per- sonal quest to search for answers. My quest for answers ended shortly a couple of days later. Three freshmen approached me ‘and stated their interest in Stu- dent Government. Personally, I was very happy to know that the three freshmen recognized who I was and were inquiring about SGA. Our conversation went on very well. I was explaining who my fellow officers were and where our office is located on campus. They looked at me with a puzzled look. The S.L.A.M.? What's that? Andy Hilt? Who's he? From that very moment I realized why stu- dents did not come to our office. They don’t know who we are, where our office is located, and Kennedy was 41 when he tried to get the Vice-Presidency in 1956. Dan is 41 now. Notice any simi- larities. Kennedy was 45 when elected President. Dan Quayle has just as much experience as J.F.K. did. Quayle has spent 4 years in the House (vs. 6 years for J.F.K.) and 8 years in the Senate (vs. 6 years for JF.K.). Let the record show that John Kennedy missed 25% of all roll calls in the House. This isn’t exactly Presen- dential material by today’s stan- dards. Dan Quayle has a 89% attendence rate. This election is about ideology and competence. We have a sit- ting Vice-President whose ad- ministration has brought eco- nomic prosperity and world peace. His challenger, the “Duke of De- ception,” is a left wing liberal who will destroy and reverse our pros- perity. His ideas are so far left they left America with McGovern’s campaign. His ad- ministration in Taxachussets is one of documented corruption and imcompetence. In my next article I will show who the Duke of Deception is re- allly like. We will talk facts, facts which the liberal press will not question. When America learns who the real Dutaxes is this will insure a Bush landside what purpose we serve for them and the University. First of all, let me introduce this year’s officers for the 1988 - 1989 academic year. The SGA officers are: Andrew Hilt (Presi- dent), Basia Sobczynski (Vice- President), Robert Knewstub (Secretary), Richard Gallo (Treas- ure), and Christine Clay (Corre- sponding Secretary). The mem- bers of Student Government are very receptive to anything stu- dents of this campus say tous. We are open to any suggestions and criticisms you may have. ~ Secondly, let me straighten out everyone’s bearings about the location of the Student Govern- ment Office. We are located in the S.L.AM. center . The S.L.A.M. centeris a module building located next to the new building. Inside the S.L.A.M. module, our office is distinguished from the -other spaces with a sign that reads: “STUDENT GOVERNMENT AND CLUBS/ORGANIZATION CONFERENCE CENTER AND OFFICES..” Stop by and make an appearance anytime. Our office hours are 11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. continued on next page
