Nowhere in the pro- gram's philosophy does it say not to drink. The program is solely . for the purpose of educating people in how to. make responsible decisions about alcohol use and misuse. The BACCHUS philosophy ~ consists of four points: Get Help Like Jason Robards Got. Call The National Council on Alcoholism In Your Area. Or write NCA, 733 Third Avenue, 1. Don't make drinking the primary focus of an activity. 2. It is everyone's right to drink or not to drink. . 3. Don’t encourage or rein- force irresponsibility when it comes to alcohol. 4. Drinking is limited by laws governing drinking and driv- ing; respect these laws. BACCHUS was founded in 1977 at the University of Florida. Now there are over fif- ty chapters located in twenty- five states and Canada. Efforts are now being made to start a BACCHUS chapter on this campus. Through BAC- CHUS, those interested could gain an understanding of such by Dan Loney Representative Steven Friend is an ambitious, affable personality who functions for and as a part of our community. he is a relatively young man, a young man who in ‘a short period of time has extended his benevolent hand to the entire community. Mr. Friend is a . family man who realizes the im- portance of his job. A job in- fluenced by his moral values to work hard. This drives him to push for laws that make this commonwealth safer for its in: habitants. Steven Friend is a man who knows what is wrong, but more importantly. he is a ‘man who has the will, resources and intellect to make it right. ‘He expressed his views to me in a short talk that we had one day not long ago. 1 asked him about legislation in Harrisburg that had any bearing in state 1.2. 0.2.0.0.0.0.¢ 1 VOTE 2. 0.0.0.90.0.0.0.0.¢ Penn colleges and universities: he replied yes, a major one. The legislation under consideration would shift the responsibilities of who runs the system, cur- rently the governor, to a chancellor and his committee. The shift in responsibilities would result in cleaner policies and would make the system itself more autonomus. I then mentioned that the voting bloc for people in the 18-21 year old range is weak, and what would he suggest we could do about it?. He replied that we should become more ac- tive and that we should par- ticipate with local politicians in can effort to. make our. voice “heard. He then became very ex- cited and he said that people our, age generally don’t par- ticipate in voting and elections, - but we then turn around and complain when something goes “wrong that we don't like but we could change. [ then asked Representative Friend how he manages to keep that close, personal touch with his voting constitency. He believes that a certain blend of using the commercial media and hard work is essential. He also is an easily accessible per- son, willing to share much of his time with the surrounding com- munity. ; I finally presented Represen- - tative Friend with the question of political science as an academic major for a- college student. His view was clear: A political science major becomes too bull headed and narrow minded. He suggested that a person interested in pursuing a political career should field a solid base in English and History. And if you want. to realize your goals such as Steven Friend did. *'You have to work vou tail off!” iS Letter To The Editor We owe a questionable thank you to the U.S.A. for their ef- forts in planning and executing the 1983 SPIRIT WEEK. It lacked one principal ingredient — SPIRIT. Of the twenty-one events scheduled, at least eleven were never held. : What assistance, if any, did U.S.A. seek from faculty ad- visors and club presidents? Onc meeting can hardly assure th2 success of any event. What, if anything, can be done to generate enthusiasm within the student body? The last issue of LION'S EYE featured an interview of students by Denise Weaver and Patricia Matkowski. Most of those interviewed complained about lack of social activities. However, now I ask, was it stu- dent apathy or lack of leader- ship that robbed SPIRIT WEEK of its intended purpose? Getting a chapter started on this campus pro- failure because of student apathy, weak organization, or the weather. I think it was a combination of all of them. It has been said over and over again that students should get involved with campus ac- tivities. That is true, but it shouldn't stop there. A student will join a club to get involved what they have. However it is the leader of the group who has the responsibility to provide a place for that person and en- courage them to get involved. If any link in that group is weak the group will be weak. For ex- ample if the club is holding an event and one or two people that are needed forget to help solve this problem? One solu- tion is better organization and communication. If all the details are worked out before hand then chances for success are greatly increased. Also if communication between members in the group is kept alive everyone will be aware of what is going on and problems N.Y.,,N.Y.10017 mises to be an interesting, and be apart of something.
