Vol. XIV, No.1 Pennsylvania State University, Delaware County Campus September 1, 1982 WELCOME John D. Vairo Campus Director This is a highly significant day for you as you begin your Penn State ex- perience here at the Delaware County Campus. The day is important because what happens to you today and for the next several days will set the foundation upon which will rest your intellectual future and career. I am sure that many of you wonder why you are here. The obvious answer, of course, is to get a degree, but there is much more to earning a degree than ac- cumulating credits. Every year a new group of students brings with it a new set of hopes and ex- pectations. The message must be repeated time and time again. Somewhere within this class this year is that one mind that may spark a creative thought that helps the world. It could be you. We need creative men an women who are not afraid to think. We need men and women who are willing to discard old ideas and replace them with new, constructive ones. You are so for- tunate, as new students. You are young and untested. You have good minds. You are the ones facing the challenges and you are the ones who will have to live with what you create, good or bad. You are here to think and to learn. I can think of no other valid reasons. You can do these things and still have fun, of course. College is a joyful occasion. You will make new friends, talk about new Welcome from Dean Linder All of us in Student Affairs welcome you to the Delaware County Campus! I am pleased to send greetings once again to those of you whom I have met and to you students I have yet the pleasure of meeting, as you embark on one of the most memorable periods of your life, your college career. Congratulations are also in order to you for being chosen to attend the University. Naturally, this speaks well of your academic performance up to this time. However, I should like to point out that the years you are in college will pro- bably be the last time in your life you will be able to devote most of your energies toward self-improvement. So choose your academic and social ac- tivities wisely as you move forward on the road to professionalism by being a “thinking doer’’ not a “wishing hoper.” The future is yours . . . go get it! Once again, I hope that this ex- perience will be a happy one for you, full of fond memies and pride at being able to call yourself a student of The Penn- sylvania State University. Take advan- tage of what is here. In the Penn State tradition, work hard, play hard, and most of all, contribute something of yourself to the life of the Campus. Best Wishes To All of You, Edward F. Linder, Jr. Dean of Student Affairs ideas with the new friends and faculty, test yourself and your ideas. You have fun and just generally enjoy life. And at the same time you see the seriousness of it all. Fools are quickly forgotten. The serious thinker will make a mark in life never to be forgotten. We know you have the ability to do so. My very best personal regards and best wishes to you now and into the future. Edward Linder Dean of Student Affairs
