— LION’'SEYE — March 30, 1982 SPOrits BASEBALL 1982: How Teams Stand by Nick Anastasio NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST St. Louis - Best record in the division in last year’s strike- shortened split-season. This year they should prove that last year was not a fluke. Ozzie Smith will bolster the infield defense, and Lonnie Smith will provide the offensive sparkplug that Garry Templeton used to. Montreal - Almost made it to the World Series last year. This year they might, if their bullpen can match St. Louis’. PHILLIES Having rid themselves of 1% of their start- ing lineup from last year (Lon- nie Smith, Keith Moreland, Larry Bowa, and Bake McBride), the Phillies are start- ing a rebuilding program, and it takes rebuilders a few years to win a pennant. Chicago Speaking of rebuilders, meet the Chicago Phillies. One-fourth of their pre- season roster is comprised of ex-Phillies. Dallas Green has made the Cubs baseball's most improved team, but there's still a lot of work left. New York - With George Foster, Dave Kingman, and Ellis Valentine in the lineup, the Mets will score a lot of runs. The question is, how many will they give up? Pittsburgh - Finished last in the second half of last year and did little to improve themselves over the winter. NATIONAL LEAGUE WEST Houston - After almost win- ning the pennant in 1980 and almost winning the division last year, the Astros seem to have finally put together a Intramural Basketball by Pete Norquist Intramural Basketball begins the week of April 5th and con- tinues through the week of the 19th. If enough interest can be generated, intramurals tennis and women’s field hockey will also be available to all those in- terested, Any students in- terested in these programs are encouraged to contact Mrs. Griffith in the PE building. team that can go all the way, especially if J.R. Richard can come back. Los Angeles With or without Fernando Valenzuela, the Dodgers are still the team to beat. That goes with being the defending World Cham- pions. Cincinnati - Last year’s out- field is gone, and Johnny Bench plays third base like a little leaguer. There's little chance that the Reds will repeat as owners of baseball's best record. Atlanta - If Bob Horner could ever play a whole season, he would be deadly. Maybe this year. 3 San Francisco - Baseball's over-the-hill gang. Frank Robinson's really got his hands full. : San Diego - Dick Williams turned Boston, Oakland, and Montreal from losers into win- ners, but the Padres need about five years to become con- tenders. AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST Milwaukee Best overall record in the division last year. This year, their offense is more powerful than the Yankees’, and Rollie Fingers is the best reliever in the game. Baltimore - Earl Weaver is retiring after this year, and chances are he’ll go out a win- ner. _ New York - After losing the World Series last year, George Steinbrenner decided to turn the Yankees into a speed, pitch- ing, and defense team. Only problem is that Yankee Stadium is a hitter’s ballpark. Detroit - Sparky Anderson predicts 50 wins from his top three starters are needed for the Tigers to win the pennant. Cleveland - After finishing sixth for the past five years, the Indians are ready to move up — to fifth. Boston - As long as manage- ment allows free agents to leave, without replacing them, the Red Sox will continue to slide. Toronto - Dave Steib wants to be traded, and if he goes the Blue Jays will be lucky if they win 50 games. AMERICAN LEAGUE WEST Oakland - SWIMMING by Pete Norquist Atte tion all GILLMEN and FALLING BODIES: swim- mers and divers are needed im- mediately to splash and troll in the Commonwealth Champion- ships, April 2,3, and 4. Last Team year, placed second in both the men’s and women's divisions. Lets do last years effort one better! All our Aqueous Felines interested and ‘‘buoyant’’ par- ties, please contact Mr. Doran in the PE building as soon as possible. ‘Wanted: Sportswriters As you can see, there's not much sports on tr s page that has anything to do with Penn State. There's a reason for this: our sports staff currently con- sists of two writers transplanted from the enter- tainment department. They were assigned to write sports because, quite frankly, we didn't want a blank page. So if you would like to write sports for the THE LION'S EYE, please drop us a card in our mailbox in the Student Af- fairs modular. Include your name and phone number so we can get in touch with you. Thanks. BillyBall is alive and well in baseball's weakest division, as long as the starting pitchers stay healthy. Chicago - The White Sox are convinced that they can make the World Series this year. That depends on their defense. Texas - Eddie Chiles is trying to build a winner. Off-season trading was a step in the right direction. Kansas City - George Brett can't carry the Royals for a whole season. Neither can Larry Gura. California - Reggie Jackson can't carry a team, either, unless it’s October. By then, the Angels wil be out of the race. Seattle - Gaylord Perry will go for his 300th career victory. He has 297 already — seven more than Seattle has in five: years. Minnesota - The new stadium is the Twins’ only attraction this year. The players couldn't attract flies. Street Hockey by Bob Smith There will be signs posted in the Main Building for anyone interested in playing street hockey. The team is in the pro- cess of being organized; more information will be given when further development is made. When the team is organized it is urged that only serious people join. Phillies to Play First Game in New Metrodome On April 3, the Minnesota Twins will play the Philadelphia Phillies in the brand new Hubert H. Hum- phrey Memorial Metrodome in Minneapolis. It will be the first game ever played in the stadium. Phillies and Twins will also play the second game ever played at the Metrodome the following day. These two games will be the Phillies’ final exhibition games. They open their 1982 regular season on Tuesday, April 6, with a home game against the New York Mets. The two teams will also play the next night. Both games start at 7:35. The Phillies will also host the Montreal Expos April 9, 10, and 11, before heading out to the West Coast for two weeks. The April 9 game starts at 8:05, the April 10 game at 7:05, and the April 11 (Sunday) game at 1:35. 1982 Tennis Team Schedule Team York Mont Alto Berks DCCC Altoona Ogontz Hazelton Tue., Ar. 6 Th., Apr. 8 Sat., Apr. 10 Tue., Apr. 13 Sat., Apr. 7 Th., Apr. 22 Tue., Apr. 27 Date 3 p.m. 3 p.m. 3 p.m. 3 p.m. 3 p.m. Time 3:30 p.m. il am.
