NMI Women's volleyball The 1982 women's volleyball team was under the direction of a new head coach this year. In his first year at the helm of the women's volleyball team, COach Bruce Young led the team to a 6-10 record. The team got off to a slow start, with a record of 2-10. After the team got rolling they won their last 4 matches to finish the season at 6-10. "I at tribute the slow start to two factors. This was my first year coaching a women's team, and it took me a while to adjust to the situation. I'm sure that I made some errors that contributed to the sluggish start. Secondly, only two players had ever played volleyball before, and there were no returning varsity players to take charge of the team." Men's This year's men's volleyball team finished with an overall record of 10-7, and a 3rd place finish in the Com monwealth Campus Athletic Conference, behind New Kensington and York. The team got off to a slow start, since there were no p ayers return ing from last year's team. An i ther problem that had to be overcome was the 1. ck of playing experienc : among the team. All, nine players were totally_new to the game of volleyball, never having - played competitively before. But the players were able to develop the necessary skills quickly enough to hold their own against many more ex perienced teams. "All in all, this year's team was the most well balanced team that we have had. There were no players who were far superior to the others. Everyone was able to contribute to a total team effort," commented head mentor Bruce Young. "The two main As one of the two players with , any volleyball experience, Captain Yvonne Cormier was the team leader on the court. Her ag gressive play kept the team alive in many games. Andrea Koretz, the other experienced player, was also in strumental in the team's performance. Andrea was the steadiest, most reliable player on the team. She rarely made mistakes on the court, and her performance helped to steady the team during the games. Members of this year's team who will be back to lead next year's team are: Andrea Koretz, Anne Martino, and Wen dy Wertz. "With these three players coming back, we will have the nucleus for a very good team." Volleyball highlights of our season would have to include the match we played against the University of Penn sylvania. To be playing a school of this caliber was something that played on the minds of our men. We lost the first game 15-0, but came off the court realizing that Penn was not a team of supermen. In the second game, our men regained their com posure and played very well. We had a 12-10 lead, but Penn. proved a little too strong, and we lost 15-12. Even though we lost the match, I think our guys realized that they were capable of playing well when they put their minds to it." The second highlight would have to be in the CCAC Tournament match with New Kens- ington, the eventual overall champion. In a total of 24 games played that day by New Kens ington, Hazleton was the only team to defeat them. New Kensington ended the day with a first, place finish and a 13-1 record. "Although finishing 3rd in the CCAC, we did place one player on the All-Conference Team. This player, Dave Schultz, was a valuable asset to the team all season, and was the best all around player that we had. He was one of our main spikers, a secon dary setter, and also a good defensive player." "As a final comment, I'd just like to say that I was well pleased with the performance of this year's team. Considering the level at which we started on the first day of practice, and the level of performance that we ended with, after just 10 weeks of playing the sport, I feel that our team members deserve a lot of credit. Their im provement is a credit to their ability as athletes." Members of this year's squad were sophomores Dave Albright (captain), Joe Curto, Greg Fortna, Brent Kreider, Scott Monticello, and Dave Schultz. Freshmen members were Craig Murray, Will Robertson, and Jim Schmitz. Compendium 6 Basketball The Varsity Basketball team at Hazleton had an excellent season.
