Page Four - Highacres Collegian, Feb. 17, 1977 IF PEOPLE COULD CARE To the Editor: In response to the John Emanon's Leter to the Editor in the January 31 edition of the Collegian I write this re ply. It is beyond my scope of reasoning how any theology stu dent, or anyone for that matter, could write such a heartless, morbid statement of his feel ings concerning life. Leave my personal feelings aside the grounds used for the promotion and acceptance of the abortion amendment centered around the concept that the fetus is not considered a human being and therefore, the terminology of the word murder was not relevant. But this "thedlogy student" sees abortion as murder and calls it a tech nicality! and justifies his reasoning and its acceptabil ity upon the life supporting necessity of hunting. To someone upset about the wasting of natural re sources to produce contra ceptives, when legalized abotion exists, totally irks my inner humanity. It is thought process es such as this that led Hitler bo slaugter millions and Stdlin to have evens larger nauseating statistics. They justified their doings in the same way. "The peo ple executed wer.#'unwanted, unproductive, and a burden to society." Perhaps our John Emanon does not stand alone; per haps this is the basis for our problems that stretch to our questional beginning of history. If pebple could care, a bit more about others, (I do not exclude myself) .i instead of just themselves, pehapci we could find a more logical, humanistic.solutions to our problems. How has this taken place? The article "SUB Without Plans for Big Concerts in New Gym" starts the ball rolling by in terviewing the SUB President. This interview had taken place in the beginning of January. Looking in retrospect on the circumstances surrounding the gym at this time we find that there were no publically known standards on matters concern ing the use of the gym. What organization would be so ir rational as to plan an activity in a building whose uses are undetermined? The editorial "On The Ball" criticizes the SUB for having no plans for large concerts. Unfortunately, The Collegian had referred to the aforemen tioned. article and erroneous ly correlated the SUB’s opin ions on large concerts dur ing a time period when no standards had been set on pro curring the Physical Education Building with The Mark Lane Lecture, an event that was successfully executed after standards were formed — an unjust correlation by all means. Another error of The ian in the "On The Ball" editorial is the ref erence to the folk-rock group "Morning Song", as "only local ly known." The group "Morning Song" was established in Uni versity Park and has gained much recognition throughout eastern, North States. It is also not uncommon for "Morning Song" to tour through out the Southern states. For instance, the concert follow ing their performance at our Collei Continued on Page 8 WAKE-UP To the Editor: Being a student at Penn State, Hazleton Campus and being: secretary of SUB last year, a member of SGA last year and treasurer this year, a member of Parnassus Honor Society last year and this year, and a member of Circle K Club last year, I have been involved with many fund raising and functional events here at Penn State. And I feel the obligation to speak on a matter that bothers me and many others here at High acres. The one biggest gripe or complaint I have heard from students is "There is nothing to do on a given night here at Highacres." To this I answer Bullshit. On February 6, in the Commons the SUB sponsored a dance. A group played, who were by no means professionals in group status, but being students from this campus, j and excellent in each's own way, they caught my at tention. To my disbelief, I was told by the President of SUB, this group was recieving no thing in return for their play ing. They played just for the sheer fun of getting together And what piss-poor aud ience it was at that. The SUB has been running events all year long without, re sponse from the student Dody and was glad to get this group, for their funds are running low this late in the school year without income from their events coming. I ask, why doesn't the student body get off their asses and participate in thes events. If they want no events, then they should say so. But don’t complain, about no events when there are plenty to go to each . week. This Campus is what we, the students, make of it, and nothing else.' And if Continued on Page 5
