W Welcome to Dullsville, sometimes known as the Hazleton Campus of Penn State. 'When you go to school at the Hazleton Campus, it is one long ’bore. There is simply nothing toodQ. At least this is what'we are hearing from most of the students this term. We on the newspaper staff do not agree with most of the students on this point. We feel that the problem is neither the location nor the size of the campus, but rather the apathy of the students. As a matter of fact, we believe that the same people who are bored at High acres will be bored anywhere. What caused this mass apathy at Highacres? It appears to have started during Orientation Week when the presi dent af our student Government was speaking to the freshmen. His speech concerned the activities at High ,acres„Our president mentioned some of the organizations, realizing thattthaseefew would not interest everyone* Therefore,-he appealed to you, the student body, to dis cuss any interests you might have that, are not embodied in the present clubs. Thus, he gave you the freedom to initiate any new activities. But few responded ..simply because freedom requires responsibility. Moreover, most of you would riot participate in ac tivities that interest you. You lack enthusiasm, even when it concerns your, own happiness.. I ask you, is your environment dull? Or are you dull? If you want an exciting time at Highacres, do some thing about itl Do not become.part of the mass which is manipulated by a few ’’'responsible" men. Become respon sible yourself and master your own destiny. No one can toll you what interests you, nor will they force you to do the things you like. Incidentally, these statements do not apply .only to your social life. Statistics show that college students who participate in extra curricular activities (foot ball, fraternities, Student Government, etc,) have bet ter acedemic records. Of course, there are exceptions, but not as many as you would like to think. Y6u crin make your stay in Hazleton either dull or ex citing —it is up to you.
