Thurs., Oct. 23-4:30-4-2; 5:30 Notes On Our Basketballers by Dom Lambert: Sports Editor While the Soccer team is operat ing in high gear, the Basketball team is preparing for its season opener on Nov. 25 against Ashta bula (away). Coach Marty Mal kin announced that 19 eager bas ketball players have been coming to practice regularly. Of them, 4 are returning from last year's un defeated team.. They are Doug Zimmerman, Mike Hook, Eric Obert, and Pete Saunders. The Cubs have found height in Don Williams (6'4"), Gary Paraway (3'5"), and Ron Quasneski (6' s''). The coach has been running the team to get them in shape and will let them have scrimmage games very soon. He described the team as good, fast, hard basket ball players who have great abil ity. THE NITT ANY CUB Kickers Beat Dubois Lose To Fredonia SC The Behrend Campus soccer team booted to its second victory of the season over Dußois Campus, PSU, on our field last Saturday. Under Coach Lauffer's direction the team played its best game of fensively by dominating the ball throughout most of the game. The Orioles had won the first game of the 1969 World Series. Don Buford hit a leadoff homer to delight the crowd. Three more Oriole runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning, helping to their 4-1 win. Baltimore swept the Minnesota Twins for the American League pennant. Enter the New York Mets, winners of the National .League, earned by their beating Atlanta 3 games to 0. That Saturday was the last game the Mets were to lose. The Mets' express, spearheaded ,by Jerry I . oosman's -two hitter, tied the Series with a 2-1 win. The Mets went ahead two games to one, again on pitching. Gary Gentry, the Mets' rookie, and Nolan Ryan combined for a 5-0 win, giving up only four hits. Tommie Agee and Clendennon hit homers to help the Met cause. Game four was not decided in regulation time, but the Mets scored in the tenth, and a 2-1 victory was theirs. Tom Seaver pitched ten innings to pick up the win. Now there was one more game - to go. The stunned Orioles struck for three runs in the third inning, but the Mets, behind Clen denon and Weis homers, came back for a decidig 5-3 win. The Mets scored the go-ahead runs in the eighth inning. The Mets were the champions of the baseball world, and another Baltimore team was deprived again of a cham pionship by a New York team. The Mets won on pitching and fielding. Met pitchers gave up only five Oriole runs in the last four games. Toth Agee and Ron Swoboda each saved a game with fantastic catches. - ' Teamwork also markel the 1969 Mets. Donn Clendenon hit three homers, and all eight of the most-played. Mets scored at least one run and collected two hits. The Oriole sluggers,- F. Robinson, B. Robinson, -Blair, and Buford hit .187, .053, .100, and .100, respectively. Boog Powell managed :263; but failed to collect RBI. Oriole pitching was good (2.72 ERA) but the Mets - came through...and lion everything. , Congratulations, Mets. - • - - • . How ever, they stayed two games be hind the Rams . . . The Rams scored the most points in a game against the Packers since 1961, 34, making a 34-21 win theirs . . . Packers runners managed 38 yards rushing for the game . . . Another masterful defense was turned in by Minnesota, as they overpowered St. Louis 27-10 . . . In the East, Dallas scored 7 touch downs to romp over the Eagles 49-14 . . . Washington, down 14-0, came back to win 20-14 ovevr the Giants . . . The Redskins are now 3-1-1, behind undefeated Dallas . . Cleveland beat Pittsburgh Sat urday in a high scoring contest, the Browns 42, Pittsbburgh 31 . . Cleveland is 4-1 and leads their division by one game over New York, two games over St. Louis . . In the American League, Oakland earned a safety near the game's end to make their total 50 to Buf falo's 21 . _Kansas City held off Miami 17-10, to stay'/ 2 game back ... Denver built a large lead, and held on for a 30-2 S win over, Cincinnati . . . The Broncos and. Bengals both sport 3-3 records . New York took sole possession of first place in the east by beating Houston . . . However, Boston could care less, as they surrender ed to a 13-10 score to San Diego . . Boston is 0-6. will put up its 2-1-1 record against Erie County Tech at Buffalo, N.Y. The next home game will be on Tuesday, Oct. 28 against Bradford-Pitt.
