Breast Cancer Walk Participants has 20 Fundraise for Awareness “I would participate in anything that gets people out of their cubicles and involved in an organization,” says Valerie Duhig, public information. “Anything done in the community like this is golden.” , Duhig is referring to the third annual breast cancer walk that was held on October 16 at noon. As many of us know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this campus is not alone in participating in the awareness activities. Originally scheduled to be held outside, the one-mile walk was moved indoors due to inclement weather. The 20 par ticipants completed 13 laps around the gymnasium of the Capital Union Building, then returned to the lobby for refresh ments, compliments of Costco Wholesale. There was some health education information such as “How to Give a Self- Breast Exam” provided as well. Mary Lou Martz, R.N., health services, organized the walk three years ago. Martz had participated in the walks at City Island and wanted to have something similar here on cam pus. While being a liaison for Health and Public Safety, she decided to start the walks at both Penn State Harrisburg and Schuylkill campuses. Cecilia Boran, R.N., who organized the walks for the Penn State Schuylkill Campus, s&ys the campus has been aptive in promoting breast cancer awareness for several years. “The interest came from the nurse who used to work here,” she says. “She was a board member of the American Cancer Society and always worked hard to promote cancer awareness.” Boran said that she passed away from cancer in May. The Schuylkill campus had approximately 46 walkers participate. The Radiology students participated by setting up a booth to X-ray (mammogram) for lesions in the breast. Lots of educational material was also distributed by the Department of Health. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. In 2001, an estimated 192,200 women were diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,600 women died of the disease, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Mammography reduces breast cancer mortality rates in women ages 40 to 74. In younger women, however, much controversy lurks over mammagrams as some doctors say false positives result in unnecessary biopsies. Doctors recommend that women over 50 receive a yearly mam mogram since two-thirds of breast cancer patients are in this age category.
