This doesn't usually happen. A prime example is the new Cannae disk. The music sounds "THE VOCALS SOUNd VERY MUCH [I kE COOkl E MONSTER. like a bad rip-off of Morbid Angel with a bit more melody. The vocals sound very much like Cookie Monster. . . "I WAAANT COOOKIE." Maybe I'm get ting soft, but lately I'm much more into bands pushing the progressive limits than trying to regrow metal's roots. I don't rec ommend this one. Save your money and go buy Lamb of God. All 19 tracks were torture to my ears. Some of the songs were slow, drawn out and boring. Furthermore, the heavy songs all sound similar, especially the two hit songs "Disposable Toons" and 'The Fight Song." "Disposable Toons" reminded me of one of their older songs, "The Beautiful People," so much I'd call it "The Beautiful People II." Their lyrics are about God, revolution, pistols and presidents. I have no idea what message they are trying to send. Another problem I have with this band is their gothic, satanic image. Why do they have to be so fake? Seriously, this band should break up. As a matter of fact, it should have never formed. For Fans of. Discounting the first single, "Original Prankster" (which is just a junk "No doubT ABOUT IT, THIS ONE REALLY ROCKS my cßub!" pop tune designed to keep them recogniz ably on the radio), the rest of Conspiracy of One is fabulous. No doubt about it, this one really rocks my crib! By going back to their alternative rock roots, The Offspring have created a CD that rivals their smash album. It's far better than the Americana record. For Fans Of: Mainstream Alternative Rock Sex, drugs and violence are all pre sent in his latest film, Requiem for a Dream, but these elements aren't the focus of the story; it's the downward spi ral of each character that really upsets the Marilyn Manson 1 audience. The Gooseman The Offspring Conspiracy of One Columbia Nov. 2000 Alternative Rock REVIEWS "Requiem for a Dream" By Richard Hauck For the Capital Times With all the violence in motion pic tures desensitizing film audiences today, director Darren Aronofsky (r) has achieved something few have done truly disturbed us. The plot follows the gradual deteriora tion of four main characters. Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto) and Tyrone C. Love (Marlon Wayans) are heroin addicts, des perate to become more involved in deal ing drugs. Harry balances this lifestyle with one that includes his sober girlfriend, Marion Silver (Jennifer Connelly). Harry's mother, Sara (Ellen Burstyn), is addicted to infomercials and lives alone. It's not hard to relate to these charac ters to some extent; each of them has flaws mirrored by humanity. Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly have excellent chemistry, and Marlon Wayans draws sympathy in his portrayal. Ellen Burstyn gives a performance that rivals the one she gave in The Exorcist. Clint Mansell's music lends a sour tone that works well with the theme. This is Aronofsky's second major film, and he's already developed his own unique style. He uses split screens to illustrate simulta neous reactions, and applies irregular close-up shots to create an uncomfortable scene. Aronofsky. doesn't spoon-feed the audience, either. Instead of shooting the actors using drugs, we see retinas enlarge, lighters flicker and liquid bubble. An elapsed-time effect similar to Stanley Kubrick's in A Clockwork Orange, illus trates drug-induced states. Sara's halluci nations are sometimes as subtle as food appearing on tables. Despite the harsh story lines and the even harsher conclusion (if you'll note the title, you'll know not to expect a happy ending), Requiem for a Dream brings a sad reality to the screen while retaining its social impact. As for Aronofsky, he's off to do the Warner Bros.'s Batman: Year One later this year. From what he's done in Requiem for a Dream, maybe we should be more worried about the "Caped Crusader" than his enemies. film review
