May 2, 1990, CAPITAL TIMES 4 OPINIONS From the Editor's Desk: My term as editer-in-chief comes to an end with this final issue. This period has given me an oppotunity to closely examine Penn State Harrisburg and all that it represents. There is an obvious sense that PSH is in transition, but there is no clear vision of where the future lies. There are obvious changes students would like to see take place, but any real movement probably requires a magic wand. The words "student apathy" have been uttered everywhere in PSH, from the provosts office, to SGA, to every club on campus. These words have even crossed through my gritted teeth as I run to my box of No-Doze whenever the next issue is due. Students constantly complain about the lack of things to do on campus while sitting back mesmorized by a rerun of "The Facts of Life". It's frustrating as hell listening to these students complain about how they feel cheated because PSH isn't doing anything for them socially. Well, let's welcome them to the "real world." These people might also believe someone is going to come through their television and offer them a job that starts at six figures. Holy steamvent Batman, I know where these people are going. If you're not the type of person who likes to seek something better--what are you doing in college? Learning doesn't just take place in a classroom, whatever your major is. Next semester, Victoria Cuscino will take over the position of editor-in-chief--and in my view--there is no one who could do a better job. This semester she has not only earned my respect and admiration, but also my trust and friendship. I would like to thank everyone who worked on the Capital Times this semester, especially Vicki and Henry Rappold for their support and occasional kick in the pants. In closing, I would like to wish all the graduating seniors success and hope the returning juniors can return after a happy and healthy break. In the fall I will take over as editor-in-chief of the Capital Times , so I want to address an issue pertaining to student life--student apathy. I am concerned about students who sit back and criticize, but refuse to get involved. For example, many students wrote letters to the editor or talked to staff members about problems with our school newspaper. All semester we have dealt with the controversey over the first issue of the Capital Times . Students criticized the issue for the typographical errors and the tardiness of the publication. The Capital Times staff appreciates constructive criticism, however two aspects exist to initiating change. Constructive criticism and expressing your views is only the first step. The second step is to get involved! You can accomplish much more if you step in and participate in the changes you demand. I have an infinite amount of respect for the people on this campus who become involved in activities and clubs and work together to achieve common goals. Does that concept sound familiar? It should; it is the definition of teamwork. Working as teams, the student body at PSH can achieve many goals that could never be realized by a single individual. If you have the time to critique every issue that we put out, or every show WPSH radio station produces, or every meeting SGA holds, etc...l believe you have the time to get involved in these activities. Channel some of your time and energy into a student organization that would benefit from your input and yield important individual rewards as well. Devoting some of your time to the student organizations has many benefits besides helping achieve the common goals of the organization: 1) gives practical experience in journalism, photography, radio production...etc. 2) helps maintain a sense of community by working with other club members to hire speakers of special topics, organize informative programs and also by working with other campus organizations to organize and co-sponsor larger events to benefit the PSH population 3) establishes feelings of accomplishment when you see your stories in print, hear your radio broadcast, have a large turn-out for your program... To make our student organizations the best they can be, we need to work together! Next semester I hope we can cooperate on club efforts and reach our full potential. PSH consists of more than learning in the classroom. I believe experience working with others and practical work experience provides tangible knowledge you can use after you graduate. You can receive these benefits either by joining the various student clubs and organizations or through PSH internship programs. But let me stress one important factor. Student organizations and clubs have the added benefits of providing opportunities to meet peers with similar interests--with plenty of time for FUN. Victoria Cuscino Editor-in-Chief elect SENIORS: CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES! THE CAPITAL TIMES STAFF WISHES YOU LUCK IN THE FUTURE, AND HOPES YOUR LIVES ARE FULL OF HAPPINESS. JUNIORS: WE'LL SEE YOU NEXT FALL! START THINKING ABOUT THE CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS YOU WANT TO JOIN AND LOOK FOR A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PROSPECTIVE CLUBS AT CLUB FEST! STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF: HAVE A GREAT SUMMER! '
