;e 8 Friday, September 27, 1985 The Capitol Times “Metal Fati Allan Holdsworth is a phenomenom. He inspires awe in amateur guitarists and strikes terror in the souls of profes sional guitarists. Eddie Van Halen, perhaps the premier contemporary rock guitarist says, “Holdsworth is the best in my book. He’s fantastic. I love him.” Who is this masked man? And what rock has he been hiding under? As it turns out, Holdsworth hasn’t been hiding, rather, he has been quietly melting the vinyl of various jazz/rock groups including Soft Machine, U.K., and also Bruford and Gong. While he is a legend in the guitar-playing community, the “average” listening au dience hasn’t heard of him. With his new album, “Metal Dorms (continued from pg. 7) “is they are so old and have been so over-used that only much time and assessment of each unit could uncover the neede improvements.” “One of the big things,” said South, “is to try and develop facilities as students develop their education.” Williams emphasized the hard work behind the facelift and urged students to ap preciate what has been accomplished. “We, hope the students can appreciate what we have done thus far and we hope to do more renovations in the future,” added Williams. Letters (continued from pg. 3) when an individual student at the cash register gets priority over a professor calling to find out what has happened to the books for his Fall course, which he ordered in June. Or why those books were returned as overstock from the last time they were used, and now cost the student more? Does answer ing these questions belie a facul ty oriented bookstore? Hey, we’re all happy to finally have something approximating a real college bookstore. Teske, Faculty gue” is ti Fatigue,” he seems to be trying to convert the heavy metal/hot guitar audience. Yet, he has failed in several aspects. Although the guitar playing is hot, the lead vocalist, Paul Williams, and the vocal melodies leave much to be desired. A perfect example is the title track, “Metal Fatigue,” which begins with a screaming guitar intro that would certainly make Van Halen jealous. It soon degenerates into an exercise of bad vocalization. On the other hand, the album is saved by the track en titled “Devil take the Hind most.” On this track Holdsworth goes all out, displaying the guitar technique that has made him famous. Holdsworth is a master of the modification of electric guitar sound (he doesn’t employ a keyboard player). Yet, even “Panic Station,” the closest thing Holdsworth has gotten to hit material, can’t save him. Again, totally uninspired vocals and vocal melodies destroy an admirable attempt. If your interested in checking out Allan Holdsworth at his best don’t buy “Metal Fatigue,” but his earlier album “Road Games” is great stuff. Happy Listening!! Get to the answers faster.
