April 3, 1975 Flames Edge Brotherhood In by Gene T. Eddy The Flames and the Brotherhood engaged in what proved to be the most exciting intramural basketball game of the season and the Flames exited as the victor, 45-42. The low scoring was in dicative of the tough man-to man defense employed by both teams and perhaps influenced by the PI AA referees calling a close game, but a good one. The Flames took a quick pyschological edge, when the Brotherhood's Tom Groves got into foul trouble early in the first quarter. The Flames were led by Joe Grant, a Varsity basketball playerwith a keen eye for 20 foot 'um • shots. Basketball Finale 22 points for the Flames and the remainder of their 45 points was contributed by: Fred Brokhoff, 11 pts., Ellis Alley, 6 pts., Tom Boyer, 4 pts., and Ken Weller, 2 pts. The Brotherhood was led by Tom Grove's 18 points and the remainder of their 42 points was by: Keith Hulton, 8 pts., Doug Spady, 6 pts., Jim Shannon, 4 pts., Spence Hampton, 4 pts., and Ramon Segree, 2 pts. On their way to the finals, the Brotherhood beat the Spread Eagle Inn, 51-39, in the preliminary round and Lois, 47-43, in the semi-final round. The Flames beat the French Ticklers, 50-46, in the preliminary round and the Foul Balls, 50-38, in the semi-final round. The Nads and the Bender Brothers were both eliminated early .'"' ARMY ROTC Veterans Program C.C. Reader in the preliminary round by the Foul Balls and Lois respectively. Many people predicted that the Foul Balls would be the runaway winner of the intramural basketball playoffs this year, but as mentioned before, they were beaten by the Flames, 50-38. Photo by P. Lund Both the Brotherhood and the Flames are well balanced teams, but the Brotherhood could not penetrate the Flame defense in order to score. When the Flames weren't going inside to Alley and Brokhoff, Grant was ready 1'I~~~; , Valuable Commodity: to hit from the outside and this left the Brotherhood a little unorganized. Although the game could have gone either way in the final quarter, the outcome was decided when both Tom Groves and Doug Spady fouled out of the game for the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood brought the ball back up court, but failed to get the tying basket. Fred Brokhoff added the 45th point for the Flames, after he was •in tentionally fouled and the buzzer signaled the end of the game. page
