Lice University Health Services—Lice on the human body is called pediculosis. Lice are most commonly found on the head and the pubic area, they may_ also be found on the eyelashes and under the arms. Three different kinds of lice cause the disease; head lice, pubic lice, and body lice. Individuals contract the disease by coming in contact with an infested ' person, comb, brush, garment, bed, carpet, or a piece of furniture recent ly used by an infested person. A louse rarely lives more than 48 hours off *the human body. They cannot hop or jump. Adult lice lay eggs (nits) on the hair shaft close to the body and they 'hatch in seven to ten days.
