Allowing their actions to speak for themselves, Penn State ha's got ten serious about addressing sexual harassment. Since 1981 the Univer sity has had an explicit policy pro hibiting sexual harassment which reads in part: "The Pennsylvania State University does not tolerate sexual harassment of its students and employees. Unwelcome sexual advances, requests and other verbal or physical contact constitute sex ual harassment." Beyond this statement of policy, Penn State has taken the step of identifying specific faculty-staff members on all campuses to be notified in the event of a laraSsment problem. Dean Reber and Career and Placement Coordinator Maryßeth Peterson have assumed the roles of harassment contact individuals at Behrend. A primary form of sexual harass ment to which the University is ad dressing itself is the harassment of female students by others in the academic community. (It should also be clear, however, that male students can be victims as well.)• Some examples of sexual • harass ment include: sexual propositions, invitations or other pressure for sex; sexual remarks and unnuendos about an individual's clothing, body, or sexual activities; and im plied or overt • threats. Sexual harassment may also manifest itself in more physical or concrete ways. Some examples of this include: staring or leering; brushing against the body; attempted or actual kiss ing; coerced sexual intercourse, as well as patting, pinching and other inappropriate touching or feeling. She points out that a single re quest for a date would not normal ly constitute' sexual harassment. Neither should an individual outgoing and, friendly nature be misconstrued as harassment. Sometimes the best way for a student to address sexual harass ment is to approach it calmly and directly. "I think nine times out of ten if you verbalize assertively, 'This is not appropriate behavior, I don't care for it' and tell that to the per son, thats going to stop it then and there." As Betty Moore, University Park, Student Life Officer points out, "People don't wake up in the morning and say, 'l'm going to sex ually harass someone today." Peterson suggests that sometimes people only need to be made aware that their behavior is offensive and they will stop. But the athletic department is not the only planned expansion for Behrend. Some progress has already gone under way for the much larger bookstore extending from the Reed Union Building. , Also extending ,off the Union Building will lie a conference room to accomodate the Continuing Education Department. With the construction of the new library, which will be located at the present sight of the Niagara field, the old library could serve many different uses. Student Government offices, a larger backroom, or possibly both are just a couple of the ideas being considered for the extra space. Of course with the expansion of the campus, certain accomodations will have to be met for the an ticipated increased enrollment. The focus, on student housing will be approached in a slightly different manner. "Suite" style buildings will be constructed and will house up to four students per suite. they will be similiar to the apartment ar rangement, but the kitchen will be omitted. Future drives are plan ned to keep the bank supplied. _ Although Alpha Phi Omega is one if several Greek societies on campus, it's different in that their main purpose is service. "Our goal is to make a difference," says Rich McCartney, vice president of. Alpha Phi Omega. Alpha Phi Omega is a member of the third largest fraternity in the country. Behrend's chapter has an enrollment of about 40 members and alumni, plus pledges.; Community service projects, such as the clothing drive, are one of four main areas of service per formed by Alpha Phi Omega chapters. Calender Day will allow the clubs at Behrend to gather together and organize all their activities for the semester. It will eventually be printed comprehensively into a calender showing all the times the different clubs will meet and the events they are planning. This is the fust time Calendar Day is being held, but Karin Lee Shrum, the Calendar Day Chairperson, hopes it will become an annual event. She believes there will be many benefits that will come out of Calendar Day. It will reduce the risk of clubs holding an event at the same time, so a person does not have to choose between two clubs. And it will "make more peo 7 ple aware of the activities occuring at Behrend", so more poeple will be encouraged to attend these events VOL` UM XXXV!, NUMBER 3 cur.
