NOVEMBER 6, 1986 Collegian PAGE 4 Burgess stuns with amazing by Steve Allei: Collegian Staff Writer You are getting very sleepy...your eyes are getting very heavy...so very, verrry heavy...hypnotized yet? Oh well, not everyone can hypnotize people and read minds. But Russ Burgess can, and did, on Oct. 28 in Reed 117. Beginning his show half an hour later than scheduled, Burgess made up for his lack of punctuality with• an overabundance of spec tacularity. - Mike Gall'uther_and_Bob..Hulkes under hypppsis Large Cheese & Pepperoni Pizza Delivered to Behrend Only A n with coupon For Only umva "plus tax" expires 11120/86 Wintergreen Cafe & Convenience Store A La Board,' and Diners Club Welcome Performing for a packed hall (his largest Behrend audience ever), Burgess wasted no time in conver ting the multitudes of skeptics into devout believers. He began his performance by asking a member of the audience to pick out, in his mind , any card in an imaginary deck and write it on a piece of paper. After narrowing it down to a number card, Burgess amazed the audience by correctly identifying exactly which card it Ilvitha4l4, ITALIAN RESTAURANT 3512 Buffalo Road Wesleyvil le Phone: 899-3423 We Deliver To Behrend Dorms and Apartments Delivery Service from 7 pm-11 pm!! Prior to reading the serial number of a randomly chosen dollar bill from a student's mind, he stunned the audience by correct ly identifying the picture on a card within a sealed envelope (a smiley face). Having convinced the audience of his truly amazing abilities, Burgess asked a Student Program ming Council member to come for ward with an envelope (complete with unbroken wax seal) that con tained three predictions sent to Behrend two weeks beforehand. Procuring three seperate three digit numbers from randomly chosen students, somehow the total of these numbers matched exactly the total Burgess predicted over two weeks earlier. His second prediction was even more mind-boggling. His predic tion for the Morning Times Oct. 28 headline, "President promises drug-free generation," was almost 100% correct with only the word order being slightly incorrect. Burgess' only visible mistake of the evening was being unable to correctly identify a card chosen by Dee Gross from an extremely shuf fled deck. Explaining that he can possibly read 80% of the minds in any particular audience, Burgess quickly compensated for his mistake by moving on to the really amazing part of his show-- hypnotism. The other initial volunteers were asked to return to the audience. Two audience members succumbed to Burgess' powers and one was asked to join the group on stage. Pranks were played on the students throughout their stage visit, and all were very amusing. Talked into believing the audience 7 am-5:30 pm 7 pm-11 pm was completely naked, hypnotized students proceeded to point out their favorite ones. The students became visibly upset with each other when Burgess led them to believe that eyerytime he said the word "now" they would have the impression that the person next to them had pinched them on the behind. Vulgar words and annoyed expressions were numerous, and Burgess had to lean on the back of a chair at times because he was laughing so hard. toured as a soloist with orchestras in twenty-two states_ Janet Ket chum is an accomplished recitalist, an Affiliated Artist, a member of the San Francisco Contemporary Players, a teacher at Dominican College, and in summer she heads the Forest Meadows Center for the Arts. It's hard to say whether or not Burgess received a standing ovation on this his third visit to Behrend because everyone was standing on their seats to get a better view. Together, these two outstanding musicians are exceptionally qualified to present an excellent performance. The Music Journal Annual is quoted as saying "In the hands of such masterful musicians as floutist Janet Ketchum and guitarist Peter Segal it proved a varied and total delight. The young duo charmed the capacity audience at the Folger Shakespeare Library. If this fine duo plays in your area during the coming season, don't miss them." And so all students and faculty are encouraged to at tend Ketchum and Segal's performance. TROUBLED? NEED TO TALK? 'E CAN HELP...WE ,ARE ABOUT YOU!
