An enter taining and enlightening narrative winds through the musical selec tions which combine vocal solos and duets by Nancy Fox-Hoover and Douglas Murdock. John Han dy, with his orchestral-like grand piano accompaniment, also brings his own solo arrangements of award-winning Broadway melodies. The three performers are all impeccably trained musicians with active careers in many dif ferent styles of music. Miss Fox-Hoover who sings all the soprano roles in the show was graduated from the University of Michigan and the Mozarteum Academy of Music in Saltzburg, Austria. She has appeared as oratorio and' concert soloist with prestigious orchestras and festivals across the country. - Last season, Music Review "Love & Hope & by The BoDeans by Paul Miniger Collegian Staff Writer Don't be frightened. The Bo- Deans is not a collection of Jed Clampett's favorite hillbilly jangles. Instead, it is the name of a Minnesota based rock band that moves to California in order to make it big - hence the name BoDeans. Even if you haven't heard of them, you may have heard Fadeaway, the only single from the album to hold a spot on the college album chart. The music is along the lines of Rubber Rodeo, Dwight Yoakam, and other neo-country rock groups. Fadeaway has alo received frequent airplay' from local top 40 radio stations. Rock purists may cringe at first sound of Sammy Lanas' voice. It has a fairly whiny but strong sound to it. This, coupled with Kurt Newman and T-Bone Burnette's crisp acoustic and electric guitar lines, joins to make the album real ly work. The song Misery is a perfect example of this. The typical sad cowpoke song is combined with familiar bass lines and raspy guitar Attend the Leadership by Suzanne Segal Collegian Staff Writer:: Would you like to meet. new peo ple, and at the same tim - e3levelop your leadership skills? She has a long list of starring roles in musical comedies, opera and opertta to her credit. Miss Fox-Hoover is a native of Oil City, Pennsylvania and was formerly on the music faculty of Indiana University of Penn sylvania. She can be heard on a series of fifteen Broadway show recordings, including such stan dards as "Camelot", "My Fair Lady" and "Oklahoma", produc ed by Music Minus One. The tenor roles in the show are sung by Douglas Murdock who has established a fine reputation as a versatile and endearing performer whose big tenor voice brings the Broadway characters to life. He was graduated from Indiana University at Bloomington, In diana and has appeared in starring roles in a large number of .regional Sex & Dreams" licks. The result is a clearly visible rockabilly sound, and never once is there crying slide guitar, or the boing-boing of a jews'- harp. Rickshaw riding sounds like an Ernest T. Bass profession of love to an oriental girlfriend. Of course, it is full of wornout Japanese cliches we will see the rising sun will you be my mamason?" The music is inno cent enough to be entertaining, but the lyrics are hard to take seriously. The song Runaway is a narrative about a woman named Mary who kills her wife-beater husband and is on the run. The lyrics feel for her victimization while the music moves along to a Los Lobos "Will the Wolf Survive?" resemblance. The BoDeans create the sound that other rock bands base themselves upon. It is the Buddy Holly „type of rock, honest and uncluttered by synthesizers and dubbing. Most of, all,- the music works. It is enjoyable to listen to and it is -never boring. Love & Hope & Sex &,Dreams is an album that is diverse as it is enjoyable and is sure to appeal. to a wide-variety of musical interests. of returning students and to let new students interact and meet other people." Mr. Murdock serv ed as Music Director with Michigan Opera Theater where both he and Miss Fox-Hoover performed and toured. He has received acclaim for his role of Lancelot in "Camelot" and the male lead in Stephen Son dheim's "Side by Side by Son dheim". A concert pianist and con ductor, he currently is pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Indiana University. Accompanist John Handy is a native of Texas and has distinguished himself equally as a pianist, violinist and conuctor. He has toured the country as conductor-pianist for the Broad way musicals "Carousel" with Robert Goulet, and "Fiddler on the Roof" with Theadore Bikel. Drake was well received by a casual group of 30 or more students on Sept. 1 at 8:00 PM. Admission was free for Student Activities cardholders, 86 cents for all others. Drake's repertoire of 20 songs ranged from Folk to Blues, but he continuosly returned to Rock 'n' Roll as his basis. He played everything from the Beatles, Dillon and Elvis to Bo Diddly, Robert Johnson, and... Ricky Ricardo? Actually the song was written by Ir ving Berlin, but Ricardo populariz ed it. Drake was considerate in only giving us a small sample of his Ricardo imitation - enough to be amusing but not annoying. Drake's success has been worldwide. He cur rently serves as Associate Artistic Director of the South Jersey Regional Theatre. He is also talent coordinator for•the daytime- Emmy awards ceremony. Songs included in the Magic of Broadway are highlights from such Broadway shows as "Oklahoma", "Show Boat", "Babes in Arms", "Lady in the Dark", "On the Town", "Carousel", "Briga doon", "Kiss Me Kate", "Porgy and Bess", "South Pacific", "The King and I", "Call Me Madam", "Kismet", "Most Happy Fella", "Candide"-, "My Fair Lady", "The MuSic Man." The Magic of Broadway will be coming to Behrend on September 13, in the Reed Lecture Hall at 8 cert with such well known names as Van Morrison; • Livingston Taylor, Emmyloti Harris and others. Drake's three albums are all available (including• his latest, "Solo Survivor", $6.98) through: Catskill Mountain Records, Red Kill Road, Fleischmanns, NY 12430. Drake's success is not all from singing. Drake schedules himself between shows and cities to give lectures on Rock 'n' Roll, it's history, faces, and unlimited trivia. Part of his singing act contained trivia, such as a story of a chance meeting between Drake and Bruce Springsteen - "playing for nobody in a room." Equipped with acoustic guitar and harmonica, wearing jeans and a white pullover, Drake projected a comfortable, carefree attitude that evetually persuaded the crowd to clap in time with a couple of songs. Further audience participation in cluded the rating of Drake's finishing high notes on a scale of one to ten. Drake's comedy was definitely subservient to his singing. The sub ject of his jokes ranged from Bob Dillon's green teeth to Billy Idol's "I.Q. of 12"...even a Ricky Ricar do joke. Drake described the au dience he saw once watching an im itation_ Elvis perform: ,"It's all, like, 48 year old women in strech pants... your mothers." He con tinued on to joke about "Rt. 80 on a Friday night... it's like combat zone out there." All in all, Drake's performance was very entertaining...•; - :even , • — if there was more•punch•on-the.flaor than in my cup.
