The Collegian December 12,1985 Page Nine Audience joins Marty Bear’s show By Mike Wimms Collegian Staff Writer In the candlelit silence of Bruno’s there came an eruption of pleasant sounds. Once again Bruno’s, with its usual standards of excellence, ushered in another evening’s entertainment. Marty Bear was the artist on hand and his unique mixture of song and comedy proved the days of wandering minstrel are not dead. Bear, like so many per formers of his calibre, believes in audience participation to enhance the performance. Songs that are - not only soothing to the soul, uplifting to the spirit, and easy to follow and join in are a part of his act. His repertoire was creative and familiar enough to the general audience to be an effective tool of. his trade. “Marty has been here several times before, and his SGA sponsors spring break vacations by Barb Cavan o Collegian Staff Writer Sunny beaches, warm sunsets and an all-around good time awaits Behrend students who go to Daytona Beach or Ft. Lauder dale this spring break. The Student Services Commit tee of the Student Government Association, is offering two, ten day vacations to either Daytona Beach or Ft. Lauderdale Florida. The trips both run from Friday, Feb. 28 to Sunday March 9,1986. The trips are, of course, entitled Spring Break,’B6. Both packages include; round trip transportation via Motor Coach, seven nights lodging in beach front motels, free poolside parties and professional staff. The Ft. Lauderdale package runs for 299 dollars for a suite for seven people, or 309 dollars for a six person suite. When asked how he got started in show business, Bear replied, “I used to sing on Broadway, -I started playing guitar in college and have been on the road for the last nine years.” Bear writes his material and acts as his own book ing agency which is run in Conneticut. Artists like Harry Chapin, Cat Stevens, Van Morrison, as well as Crosby, Stills and Nash had the most influence on Bear’s style and appreciation of music. His con temporary style, with a little Rock-a-billy, Elvis and others thrown in for good measure, spans a wide variety. Off the music subject, Bear mentioned that he seems to end up in the coldest places when winter arrives. He is just now passing through the area of Pennsylvania and hopes to return soon. Bear’s normal travel schedule includes thirty-five states in ten months. Bear also appeared on many of the major talk shows from Merv Griffin’s to Mike Douglas’s - all but Carson. A firm believer in audience par ticipation, Bear recalled an inci dent where he solicited the aid of two gentlemen from the audience during the act. The two volunteers were to listen to an Elvis Presley tune he sang and gyrate their hips on the second chorus. To his sur prise the two men stripped during their performance!
