She continued, “The benefits of this symposium are educa tional, and it will provide a social impact on campus. It will bring together groups of students who have many mutual interests but little opportunity to explore them together in other contexts. Black women is first priority in their concern of blacks and women. The commonality is inherently present in either group. They who will be job-searching, these workshops now welcome all students interested in the inter viewing process. At the first workshop (Making the Most of Your Job Interview) a speaker will cover the topics: how to prepare for an interview, what to take with you, what to wear, the different parts of an interview, faculty members: Dr. Anthony Salvia and Dr. Stuart Allen. Salvia is the director of the Quali ty Control Institute of Behrend College. He is an Associate Pro fessor of Industrial Engineering and has been employed by Penn State-Behrend since the comple tion of his doctorate from Case Western Reserve in 1970 in Statistics. • Allen is on the advisory board. He received his doctorate from the University of Minnesota in Engineering Mechanics in 1965. He has published in the areas of quantitative business methods, simulation and decision systems. Dark halls, costumed kids, and eerie music were all part of the set ting for “Wee People Come To Behrend” sponsored by the Joint Residence Council. The activity was held Tuesday evening, Oct. 29 from 6 to 7 p.m. for the Gertrude Barber Center and Staff and Faculty children. The event started with the children trick-or-treating in the dorms and ended with a reception of games and food in Lawrence Lobby. This gave the students a chance to interact with the children. All dorm and apart ments were encouraged to par ticipate and candy was made available for purchase from Joint know causes that belong to both groups. The conference will bring together these two distinct minorities on this campus.” She said, “it provides an oppor tunity of cooperation among three student groups. The Roundtable Society, Association of Black Col legians and the Women Today organization are co-sponsoring the symposium and represen tatives of each group make up the steering committee which not only work with each other, but with the administration. “We plan it to be a conference where students will be allowed to do pre-professional presenta tions.” Students are invited to and what to do after an interview. The. second workshop (Mock Interviewing-Trial Run) is essen tially a Part 2 to the first workshop. Demonstrations of model interviews will be staged for all the students. The students will then breakdown in small groups and conduct mock inter views assisted by Mary Beth The Collegian spoke with Salvia regarding the benefits that students could receive from the Quality Control Institute. “There is the possibility of a course developing for students with possible credit.” He added , “There is also a limited oppor tunity for student employment and research and students who are employed have the chance for hands-on experience.” The establishment of the Penn State-Behrend Quality Control In stitute has been endorsed by the Erie Chapter of the American Society for Quality Control and by the Erie Engineering Societies Council. The Institute has received sup port from a number of sources in Northwestern Pennsylvania. There are three categories of Residence Council. Lynn Altmire, treasurer of Joint Residence Council said, “We are definately going to con tinue this in coming years; its a lot of fun. There seemed to be more kids this year than last year.” “We would do it again but wish there were more kids,” said Den nis Raraigh of first floor Perry. “Wee People Come to Behrend” was just one of the events sponsored by the Joint Residence Council. In the future, Joint Residence Council will sponsor a scavenger hunt, resident phone book, and a long term pro ject of getting the copyrights for The Rocky Horror Picture Show. submit papers related to the con ference topic and if selected, will read their papers during the two day conference. “It provides the opportunity for cooperation among area col leges,” George said. Solicitations from students will be sent not only to Behrend and other Erie area colleges but colleges and univer sities within a 100' mile radius of Erie. “Lastly,” George said, “and very important, it is intended to be a form of art in which there will be an outreach to the community.” Peterson, career and placement they coincide with the Focus on co-ordinator. Peterson stresses ,“I’m highly recommending that all those students who have interviews at the Jobs Fair (Focus on Jobs- Conducted at Mercyhurst) in ad dition should come to these career and placement workshops because operation member companies: (1) Sustain ing (3,000 dollars and up), (2) Senior (1,000 to 3,000 dollars), and (3) Member (500 to 1,000 dollars). The Institute’s roster in cludes: Sustaining members of Hammermill foundation and Perry Mill Supply, Senior members-Amsco, Autoclave, Parker White Metal and Smith Meter, Members consist of Kop pers, Mclnnes Steel, Sepco Erie and Stam Tool. Each member company will receive the Institute’s quarterly newsletter, which is devoted to reviews of resource materials and short articles about various aspects of quality, written on the practitioner’s level.
