The Collegian October 24,1985 Page Three Columbus Day weekend keeps by Thomas Milley Collegian Staff Writer The Erie Community is getting a lot more exposure from Behrend’s ROTC program this year, as was shown by many Cadets’ participation in severi activities during the Columbus Day Weekend. On Thursday night Oct. 10, the rifle team shot with the Harbor creek High School team. The Behrend Rifles easily coasted over the Huskies in a friendly competi tion'aimed at giving both teams some pre-season practice. The Behrend Team is led by Glen Hi Calvin Fryling, Paul Kitchen, Glen Hordusky. Speaker Series focuses on “Science and Human Values” by Gregory D. Goldsmith Collegian Staff Writer As an added attraction to this year’s Cultural Series, Student Activities and the Division of Humanities and Communications have put together a lecture series. Four experts are planned to speak on science, technology and values, how they have changed'and how they affect our world today. As a guest of Behrend College, each speaker will visit classes and meet with students and faculty in formally to discuss the important issues that bring them here. Addi tionally, evening public lectures are scheduled to give members of the community an opportunity to interact with these experts. All lec tures are free and open to the public at 8 p.m. on the given date and will meet in the Reed Lecture Hall. A reception will follow for everyone in attendance. The first of the four speakers was Darwin Stapleton (Oct. 14), Associate -Professor and Director of the Program for the History of Science and Technology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He holds a BA in History from Swarthmore Col lege, an MA and PhD in history from the University of Delaware, where he was a Hagley Fellow. Lecturing on Nov: 11, Dr. Adeline Levine. Will speak on the “Love Canal: Issues, Values and Controversies.” Levine is Pro fessor of Sociology and former head of that department at SUNY Buffalo, where she lectures on On Friday night Oct. 11, First Platoon’s Colorguard presented the national and state colors for a football game at General McClain High School. The members of that colorguard are: Heidi Gebhardt, Sonja Holter, Cherice Taffe and Tim Zbel. Saturday morning Oct. 12, Cadet Company Commander Michell Miller and cadets Tim Alcorn, Tom Lippert, and Steven Wise participated in the Strohs’ Run for Liberty. Entry fees from which will go to the Statue of Liberty Restoration Fund.' Also Saturday morning, the Se Sociology and Environmental Sociology. She earned a BA in Sociology from Beaver College in .1962, an MA and a PhD in Sociology at Yale in 1966 and in 1968, respectively. Her book, “Love Canal: Science, Politics and People,” was published in 1982 (Lexington Books). Thomas Troy will continue the series on Feb. 18, 1986 with a focus on “What are Endangered Species Worth?.” Troy is the regional representative for the Mid-atlantic office of Audubon Society. He has earned a BS in Biology from Salisbury State. Col lege in Maryland (1976) and an MS in Science and Environmental Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (1980). The colorguard was led by Calvin Fryling, and its members include: Don Buckshaw, Glen Hordusky, Tom Kams, Paul Kitchen, and Christ Peachy. Saturday afternoon, the above mentioned people joined another group of busy cadets at the new rappelling sight in the gorge of Twenty-Mile Creek. Participators rappelled the cliffs of the “Snake Pit.” The Adventure Club, which hosts ROTC weekend activities, was assisted by the Crescent Fire Com pany of the North East Fire Department. The fire company provided their first-aid services in exchange for training in rappell ing procedures. On Sunday Oct. 13, MSG Young took seven members of the Scuba Club with him to dive Lake Chatauqua, NY. These members were: Ralph Drayer, David Flet cher, Michelle Grasmick, Bob Pacileo, Neil Sackett, Kevin Wagner, and Chad Weston. On March 20, 1986 Dr. Craig Humphrey will wrap up the series with a lecture on “Work and Nature in the Future Forest: Orwellian or Ecotopian?” Dr. Humphrey is an associate pro fessor of Sociology at Penn State University at University Park and a member of the Science, Technology and Society faculty there. He received a BA in sociology from Bowling Green University in 1964, and a MA and PhD from Brown University, in 1967 and 1971, respectively. Humphrey is co-author, with F.H. Buttel, of “Environment, Energy and Society’’ (Wadsworth, 1982) and has writ ten numerous papers for con ferences and publications on ques tions relating to industrialism, forestry, and ecology. This year’s Speaker Series at Behrend brings a group of distinguished professors and pro fessionals qualified to address relavant issues involving science cadets on the move The divers, over the last few dives, have recovered several ar tifacts from the lake’s bottom, in cluding: a blown glass half-pint whisky flask nearly 125 years old, a canning jar patented from 1882-1890, a pint size flask that originally held a laxative dated 1890-1895, an unopened wine bot tle, and more. They also have seen numerous articles of clothing, ten nis shoes and the like, along with 8-9 pound bass. They have also located 500 pound anchors, and and technology and how they relate to human values. Addi tionally, the speakers give students and faculty a chance to question and seek answers to some of their uncertainties. Also being planned is the recovery of golfballs from the bottoms of several area golf course lakes, to be sold as fund raisers for the group. To date, eleven people have been certified as PADI Open Water Divers. MSG Young is cer tified with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) as a Master Diver Instuc tor and as an instructor in several other disciplines. Humanities and Sciences agreed that it would be good to have the series focus on a theme relating to sciences and humanities,” Loss said. “Rather than to just have speakers be picked out at random, we wanted a series that would stress and combine our em phasis,” he continued. The series is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.
