SEPTEMBER 27, 1984 by Risa Glick Collegian Editor Peter James, a former aerospace engineer who served secretly as a CIA spy, spoke to a Behrend College audience on Wednesday, Sept. 19 with a tale that might have been taken from a James Bond novel. His slide-illustrated presenta tion was based on his personal ex periences with Russian spies, the CIA, US Air Force, and foreign intelligence agents during the past 20 years and more recently as a 100,000 miles-per-year researcher, critic, world-traveler, and ex-spy who knows what to look for. James, a 1962 physics graduate from Cleveland's Case Institute of Technology and an aerospace engineer with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft from 1962-1971 was the company's foreign technology ex pert at its West Palm Beach loca tion. "With 'Pratt & Whitney paying my salary," says James, "I became involved with the CIA and airforce intelligence in 1965 and travelled to Rome, Venice, Madrid, Paris, Buenos Aires and Athens, using science related con ferences as excuses to meet with Russian scientists, engineers, and espionage agents." His intelligence reports to the CIA received high mark and an 800-page secret intelligence analysis he authored for Air Force Intelligence was requested by the executive office of the President. James has met approximately 300 high-level Russian scientists and spies, including the 'Father campfire A "Campfire Analogy" by Tavodish Mealy A spark, born unto the cruel air of its deliverance, Lights itself upon the fragile tinder of acceptance, It smolders but a moment, then bursts to flame, Kindling and fuel for life and growth, are given early fame. How long can live a flame unfed? Fear not, for only youth is dead; The fire lives in embers red. An ember, now inturn turn does glow, As ever heat doth from it grows, But little interest it receives. Until a spark it does conceive. Then quick grows the ember old, Then too grows the ember cold. But life from death doth emanate, And this doth make the ember great. Orginally based on the book by Herb Schapiro, the story was ac tually written by children living in the New York City ghettos. Bet ween the ages of 10 and 20, these young marvels have developed a message that can be universally understood. "It's all about hope and change, which is not new to any decade," says Paul Iddings, director of the show. The music, written by Gary Williams Friedman with lyrics by Will Holt, reflects the poetry of the children and blends with the storyline to create the heartwarm ing beauty of childhood dreams and innocence - along the way. The cast members, strewn with both "rookies" and first ap pearances include: Patty Stef noski, Gail McGaughey, Andy TERRY ETZEL'S HAIR STYLING 15 years of serving Behrend College styling of your choice 10% Off with Behrend I.D. in October Only With Assisting Stylists Not Valid Saturdays on intelligence, the Senate Foriegn Relations Committee and other senators and congressmen in an attempt to expose and make public questionable government operations. Since the Watergate years, James has utilized his reputation as an ex-spy, muckraker, publish ed author and speaker to develop a world-wide network of contacts larger than when he was traveling with Russian spies and reporting to the CIA." James also did some personal traveling. "In 1982 during my se cond personal trip to Cuba," he says, "officials with the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Relations learned that I was there, and I was given the 'red carpet treatment' for the remainder of my stay. On my third personal trip to Cuba," he continues, "I was met at the airport by Cuban officials, and chauffeured in a Russian-built Ladu to accomodate my research request for The Castro Connec tion. " The connections that James makes without the use of any identification or U.S. affiliation stem from an international reputation known in foreign diplomatic and intelligence Ansell, Adria Stalsky, Seth Hub bard, Gina Sabino, Renee Staf ford, John Grgurich, Joe Williams, James Millard, Scott McGaughey, Colleen Kosak, and stage members Jan Jackovitz and Robbie Colville. Roberta Stoughton is the musical director conducting a five-piece orchestra that includes one of Behrend's pianists - Marge Podolsky. Other "behind the stage" members are Sandy Dun can, set design, Kevin Moore on sound, lights by Dana Bucci and Bob Britt, technical production by Marsha Robbins and theatre 189 as stage crew. It maybe difficult to imagine a cast and crew that large perform ing in Behrend's studio theatre. But that, among other things, is one of the theatre's unique qualities - adaptability - along with atmosphere full of creativity and the opportunity to perform what could be becoming extinct on campus - art. Performance dates are: Oct. 12-14 and 17-21 at 8 p.m. with an circles. "Hostile" governments deal with James and open doors for him without question, because his objective is to "ac curately reflect to his audience their positions on the issues." Today, James bypasses the CIA and military intelligence agencies and . reports directly to his au diences. "I want to create a net work that will get information to the public before intelligence agencies receive it," states James. This he says, "will keep spies and unscrupulous government of ficials honest by forcing them to deal with a greatly expanded public data base." A step toward this network began last summer when James created the James Intelligence and Security Agency (JISA). JISA will be the "father" of a non-profit center to expose government corruption-- something James has been work ing on for ten years under the secret name "Operation Red Dog." "By working through this center," James says, "Americans can and must control their own destiny by getting involved in our democracy." He does this by get ting people to think.
