Volunteers for this committee should also contact Leslie Schuller as mentioned previously. Dean Bainum commented that she was concerned about the lack of student participation this year at Behrend. One example of this has already been shown during the Class President elections— a total of 35 votes were cast out of the Behrend student body of over 1700. Kurt Cavano suggested that students should be educated as to what the SGA and other organizations are really about during orientation so as to in crease student participation. The only way that any of these projects can be undertaken is through the help of students on campus. The SGA urges everyone to get involved in these activities to make Behrend a more productive and enjoyable community. A New Model For Residence Hall Life “The goal of the Residence Life Staff for this academic year will be to foster and realize a self governance model in the student population.” Robert Pacella, Residence Community Coor dinator, explains the student development concepts, the floor governments, and the resident assistant roles for this year. Mr. Pacella says that the living environment of the resident student, “can have a profound impact upon his or her personal and educational development. As educators, we will be most satisfied, and will find most productive, those relationships that free students to develop their own potentialities, that involve students in a meaningful way in the development of their own learning opportunities, and that allow students to t ~ rticipate fully in shared experiences with other human beings —fellow students, educators, and administrators. This is the essence of residence education.” All Majors Mr. Pacella feels that each floor has its own personality, and the floor government has the freedom to translate that per sonality into their environment. Thus, the floor programming, boundaries, limitations, and the general atmosphere should be by Robin Baulding Collegian Staff Writer Newcomers Among Faculty by Sue Wortman Collegian Staff Writer Three new instructors, hired on a continuing basis, joined- Behrend’s Division of Arts and Humanities this Fall: Mr. Steven Greiert—Assistant Professor in History. Its meetings, held every Wednesday at 3:15 in the RUB Faculty Dining Room, seldom have fewer than 50 persons in attendance. The Outing Club’s activities, which include camping, back packing, hiking, sluing (cross country and downhill), skydiving, white water rafting, biking, and mountain climbing are spread throughout all three terms. This term to date, the club has created by the students. He says, “The floor govern ments'- in the residence hall system hopefully will serve as an instrument in facilitating in volvment, develop cohesion, and bring decision making power close to the people, where it belongs.” This is somewhat of a contrast to last year’s model. Last year, the resident assistant did the programming for floor activities, led the athletic events and did most of the decision making. Now, this year, the responsibility is a shared task. The students have' more decision-making power. The floor government consists of a president, vice president, social chairperson, treasurer, food representative, and a fire marshall. The president represents his or her floor’s views on the hall council. The vice president represents his or her floor on the judiciary board. The social chairperson gathers ideas for social activities and programs the activities. The athletic chairperson is respon sible for floor teams in athletic events. The food representative is responsible for obtaining food for social events and reporting the students’ remarks on the residence hall food. The treasurer is responsible for collecting money for events and turning it over to the hall council. They welcome anyone whether you’re- an expert or an absolute beginner or anything in between. So get involved in an active organization; maybe we can teach you a few new tricks. The fire marshall is responsible for informing his or her floor on fire regulations. So, as one may discern, the government of the floor this year is a much more shared responsibility. Does this mean that the resident-assistant has nothing to do? By all means, no. Mr. Pacella explains, “As residence life staff members, resident assistants have as a staff function basically one rule: That is, they must provide the opportunity for fellow students on their floor to become responsible for their own lives. This is not an easy task, however. Implementing this approach takes training and a great amount of patience. Fur thermore, translating this ap proach into practice means abandoning a common human drive “to take over.” In essence, the resident assistant acts as an advisor for the floor government, as well as a staff member who is accountable to the floor population. In summary, Mr. Pacella believes that the resident assistants should become responsible for their own actions. The resident-assistant’s job is to facilitate progression m the in dividual; that is, to offer alter natives, not directives, whether it be an interpersonal problem or a disciplinary problem. This way, the student becomes responsible for his or her Efe, not the R.A.
