Juliet by The New Shakespeare Company was well attended by Behrend students and the Erie public. The entire per formance was excellent con sidering Erie Hall was not equipped with adequate lighting facilities. An extension also had to be added to the stage. Over all, the actors gave a brilliant performance. Romeo, played by Kevin Gardiner, showed a very strong and ef fective character. His acting was forceful and captivated the audience. Possibly Romeo’s performance had to be so intense to cover the weakness of Juliet’s. Juliet was portrayed by Sandra Pappas. Somewhat extravagant for a Shakespeare production. Another forceful character was that of Juliet’s father, Capulet. He was played by Darryl Woodson. His influential and powerful portrayal was the best of the minor characters. Adding a bit of humor to the play was Juliet’s nurse. Susan Santino gave an amusing per formance providing the comedy to the tragedy. Both Mercutio and Benvolio gave effective characterizations in portraying themselves as friends of Romeo. Mercutio was the amusing character while Benvolio proved to be more reserved and serious. These characters were played by Jack Scowcroft and Lester Jones. The last two characters were those of Paris and Tybalt. Tybalt played by William Sweatman and Paris by John Woodbridge, both showed intense resentment toward the Montagues. A revolutionary idea was used in the production of this play. Both white and black actors portrayed the Shakespearean characters. This was valuable in showing the contrast between the feuding families. The audience’s reaction was quite favorable as the entire cast of the company received a standing ovation. Book Review By Ed Doklan Seeing Through Shuck edited by Richard Kostelanetz. 343 pages. Ballantine $1.65. Seeing Through Shuck is an anthology of the works of some of America’s finest young reporters. Kostelanetz, a veteran of three other edited anthologies, has collected essays from such prominent young writers as Abbie Hoffman, Ron Rosenbaum, David Durk, Julie Buamgold, Ishmael Reed, Michael Glenn and Paul Theroux. It’s muckracking revisited as these 25 young writers attack everything from the Playboy mystique to police corruption and food-pollution. If you’re into critical essays, Seeing Through Shuck is the most modern and up-to-date book of it s type. Kostelanetz calls the writing in this anthology “...direct, tough-minded, and avowedly challenging...”, and that’s exactly what it is. If you’ve noticed a trend in the American society for a disparity between what is said and what is even tually done try looking at what really happens and try looking at what really happens and start “seeing through the shuck.” ©Keepsake 1 REGISTERED DIAMOND RINGS WATCHES GIFTS JEWELRY Lada's Jewelry K-MART PLAZA EAST 447 Buffalo Rd.
