April 27, 1972 Behrend's Cubs Take by Tony Alo Asst Sports Editor Behrend’s off-and-on baseball team copped two out of three games in last week’s action to raise their record to a 3-2 while being washed out of one road date. Two big innings, one in each game, made the difference last Thursday as Behrend swept a twinbill from McKeesport Campus 9-2 and 8-2. In the first game, the Cubs erupted for 5 runs in the second inning to ice the victory and Mark Lytle scattered 9 hits and fanned 7 for the win. The big inning featured RBI singles by Duane Zimmerman and Bob Marks with an error letting in 2 more runs. Marks led the Behrend attack with 2 safeties in 4 trips to the plate. The Cubs clouted 6 hits off McKeesport pitching. The nightcap saw BC send 11 straight hitters to the plate while tallying 7 times. Tom Wright and Roger Nolan smashed 2-run singles and Don Raydo and Gary Ohm also drove in runs with singles. Tom Wright checked the down staters on 5 hits over seven as McKeesport absorbed its second and third straight losses of the season. Behrend Splits With Erie Community Tuesday, Erie County Com munity College stormed into Behrend Campus with “murders row” lineup the likes of which Behrend hurlers haven’t seen yet this season. The rugged New Yorkers pounded out 33 hits in the 2 afternoon games. Numerous Cub errors also lended to the visitor’s success as they buried the hapless home team 20-2. In the first game, Erie County raked 4 Behrend pitchers for 22 hits and 13 runs as (every) player Erie County CC Box Score Erie Community College-20 AB R H RBI 62 4 1 52 2 3 10 10 63 3 1 5 3 5 3 5 2 5 1 3 1 1 2 5 1 Simons, ph 1 1 47 20 22 13 Totals 28 2 2B —Barone, Metz, Jafer, Sacons, Gross Winner—O’Bryan Loser —Lytle Second Game Erie Community College AB R H RBI 4 2 3 1 Metz, 2b Marks, 3b 3 2 2 2 2 2 11 Jafer. rf Ohm, cf 4 1 1 1 4 110 Santa Maria, cf , „ „ „ , Raydo, rf 3 2 2 1 5 12 1 Strauss, 3b Kush,c 3 2 2 1 3 111 Stefano, cGrieshober, lb 3 1 0 0 4 111 Jerge, lb Harvey, If 3 0 0 1 4 12 0 Barone, If Nolan, If 10 11 4 10 0 Hagan, ss Blood,ss 4 0 2 2 ■2 0 0 1 Zip, p Malone, 2b 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Cook, p Wright, p 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 Brisban,p Houghton,p 1 3 1 0 3 10 11 6 ‘ Totals 28 11 11 10 2B—Kush, 3B—Jafer, Marks, Ohm, Houghton State Line Grocery Route 20 (Next To Kelly’s) Get your beer & groceries After visiting Kelly’s Baseball Team Boost Their Record Cubs Doubleheader Over McKeesport Campus is the visitors lineup hit safely. Metz led the winners with 4 hits in six trips while Jafer had 3 RBl’s and Stefano, Jerge, Barone and Hagan each had 2. Coach Clarence Stoner used no less than 18 players in a futile effort to try and make a game of it. However, the Cubs could only manage a meager six hits and two runs against hurler O’Bryan. Roger Nolan poked 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate and Chris Blood had an RBI double to save some face for the home club. O’Bryan coasted to the win for ECCC. Errors Lose Game The Cubs spelled their own doom with nhmerous miscues in the field allowing many unearned runs. Behrend ace, Mark Lytle, who started, was knocked out in the third inning and absorbed his first loss of the season. The nightcap was a stirring, come-from-behind win for the Cubs, as Roger Nolan smashed the game-winning hit in the last inning in a pinch-hitting role, as Behrend won a 11-10 squeaker. Behrend and Erie County each blasted .11 hits in the second game, as each team’s bats continued to boom. Bob Marks, Don Raydo, Ed Kush, and Chris Blood kept BC in the game as each stroked 2 hits. Marks, Kush, and Blood also had 2 RBl’s each for the Cubs. Pat Malone, although hitless at the plate, made sparkling defensive plays to aid the winners’ cause. The Cub’s Tom Wright had early inning problems in the mound and was replaced by Pete Houghton, who battled the tough Erie County hitters over the last five innings, to earn the victory. Brisban took the loss for the visitors. Behrend faces Niagara Com munity College in a doubleheader on Saturday to try to improve their 3-2 record. He’s been making good contact with the ball and I suspect he’ll continue to do so. His defensive play has been fabulous. Bob commented on his selection in modest fashion when he said, “There are so many great ballplayers on our team that I’m proud to be playing on the same team with them.” There is no doubt that Bobby Marks is one of those great ballplayers and he’ll go down as one of the greatest.
