High mark Blue Cross Blue Sheild an nounced a grant of $200,000 to the project, which still needs the Pennslyvannia Department of Education to approve the college's appli cation before the plan can move foward. Jim Martin, community af fairs director for Highmark said, "The money will be used for education, not bricks and mortar." Other donations to the college in clude one million dollars from the Erie Community /foundation, $lO,OOO each from Scott Enterprises, Lord Corp., Custom Engineering Co., and PHB/Reddog In duststries. Erie County Excucative Barry Grossman said hopes the grant from Highmark will spark more area compa nies and businesses to con tribute money to the growing project. Grade schoolers from ac cross Erie County decended upon a vacant lot turned to garden plot one hot after noon. Their mission: to har vest and to eat! Co-Director of the project, Gary McEnery, said that they looked for many lots in the Little Italy neighbor hood, and this little patch of green seemed perfect. Students brought their harvest into the kitchen of the Sisters of St. Joseph Neighborhood Network building where they learned torriOttoraatoe sauce and cucum ei Salad. Areas along the US east coast have declared states of emergency as Hurricane Earl makes its way into U.S. waters. Earl is said to make landfall on Thursday night. As the storm nears, it has weakened to category two and US officials predicted the storm will continue to weaken as it passes North Carolina. Although the storm is decreasing in strength, it is growing in size. Bid for Middle East peace MIDDLE EAST - US Secre tary of State Hillary Clinton said Israeli Prime Minister Ben jamin Netanyahu and Palestine leader Mahmound Abbas had the "opportunity to end this conflict." This is the first direct talk between the two combative countries in nearly two years that have begun with a pledge for peace. The countries have recieved "full and active sup port" from the U.S. President Obama initated the talks, giving them a one-year deadline. Rig explosion in gulf GULF OF MEXICO - An ex plosion on a Mariner Energy oil rig has torn through an off shore oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, just west of the site of the blast in April that caused a huge spill. Luickly, the Depart ment of Homeland Security stated that the platform, which caught fire, was not produce- The local authorities evac uated residents on North Carolina's Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island on Tuesday. Both islands are part of North Carolina's Outer Banks, a region popu lar with tourists. The North Carolina National Guard is also sending 80 troops to as sist with efforts in the region to prepare for Earl's im pending arrival. "The most important thing for people living in Earl's potential tract to do is to lis ten to and follow the in structions of their local officials," Fema administra tor Craig Fugate said. A hurricane warning has been issued for the East Coast of the US from Bogue Inlet, north-eastward to the North Carolina/Virginia bor der, and in eastern Massa chusetts. Burger King sold US - The multimillion dollar fast food chain, Burger King, was sold to a private equity firm 3G Capital in a deal valued at $3.26 billion. The company has struggled during the reces sion and last week forecast weak semand for the rest of the year. Under the terms of agree ment, Burger King's chairmain hurricane conditions are ex pected somewhere within the affected area, with the first tropical storm-force winds within 36 hours. A watch expects the same within 48 hours.
