8 I The Behrend Beacon Women’s Moore steps up in Steelers victory over Jaguars Stceler Nation spread all the way down to Jacksonville. Florida as the terrible tow els and fans wearing black and gold were seen on Sunday Night Football when the Pittsburgh Steelers faced the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Steelers defeated the Jaguars, improving their overall record to 4-1 and remain in first place in the AFC North division. Coming into the game, the Steelers were without four starters because of injuries. Despite quarterback Ben Roethlisberger not practicing all week because of a sore shoulder, he ended up 26 for 41 w ith 409 yards. He threw three touchdown passes and one inter ception. His performance earned him the award of AFC Offensive Player of the Week. Running back Willie Parker remained out of the lineup due to a sprained knee, and running back Rashard Mendenhall fractured his shoulder last week against the Ravens. Fullback Carey Davis was also forced to sit out with an injury. Defensive linemen Brett Keiscl and Casey Hampton watched the game in street clothes due to injuries. With the starter and second string running backs out the Sleelers relied on running back Mewelde Moore, usually used in third down situations, to get the job done as the starter. Penn State Altoona. Wayncsburg. and Pitt-Bradford all fell to the Lady Lions. With a combined score of 26-1 over the week, and 51-3 since their last loss, the tennis team has had a record-setting year, boasting a record of 14 wins and only two losses. They are undefeated in conference play. The Women's Tennis team will shoot for their seventh AMCC Championship on Oct 18 and 19 in Wexford. PA. He got some new friends in there.’' A.. Moore started off the game w ith a 19 yard run up the middle w hich qui eted the skeptical Steelers fans. He proved himself by finishing with a 5.8 yard average which totaled 99 rushing yards on 17 carries. Moore was one yard away from reaching 100 yards. "It would have been like icing on the cake," said Moore. "A win and 99 yards, the win is my extra yard. I am satisfied with the win. I am satisfied with what we accomplished as a team." "I've always had confidence in him |Moore|. he has it in himself and the rest of the guys have it in him as well." explained Roethlisherger. "It is great to see him gel a shot. He is doing a great job. I am really proud of the way he has played." On the Steelers opening drive of the game. Roethlisberger's attempted pass to wide receiver Sanlonio Holmes was intercepted and returned 72 yards by Jaguars cornerbaek Rashean Mathis to put Jacksonville on the scoreboard 0-7. Tight end Health Miller caught a one yard touchdown pass from Roethlisherger and kicker Jeff Reed tied the game up at 7-7. It took a while for quarterback David Garrard and the Jaguars offense to finally step on the field for the first time with 5:12 remaining in the first quarter. Pittsburgh's corner back Ike Taylor was called for a 39 yard defensive pass interference penalty which put the Jaguars on the Steelers one yard line. Jaguars run ning back Maurice Jones-Drew capi talized on the opportunity as he added another touchdown with a one yard run. Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee tacked on the extra point making the score 7-14. The second quarter was dominated by the Steelers as they scored 13 unanswered points. Historically, the team has done fantastically in play in both home and away games. At this point in the 2007-08 season, the team was 13-2. In the 2006- 07 season, the team was 15-1 by the time it reached the AMCC Championships, and edged out Altoona for a victory; they also won the Championships in the 2005-06 season after a 13-3 record and took the 18 Car both a 38 and 23 yard field goals and Roethlisberger found wide receiver Nate Washington for a 48 yard touch down reception. Going into the locker room at half time, the Steelers led 20-14. The Jaguars comeback attempt began on their first drive of the fourth quarter. Garrard's 24 yard pass to wide receiver Marcedes Lewis and Scobee's extra point pulled the Jaguars ahead 20-21. With 6:33 left in the game, the Steelers began a crucial possession. Veteran wide receiver Hines Ward stepped up as he caught three recep tions for 42 yards on this drive, one of which was an important 8 yard touch down reception. The Steelers attempt ed the two point conversion, but the pass was incomplete, making the score 26-21. The Steelers defense then shut down the Jaguars as they attempted to win the game on their last drive. Limiting the Jaguars to just 38 rush ing yards, the Steelers showed why they are ranked second among all NFL teams in total defense this year. The Steelers also are second is rush defense, allowing 66.8 yards per game, and fifth in pass defense with 164.8 yards per game. With a much needed bye week to rest their injuries, the Steelers will return to the field in two weeks take on the Cincinnati Bengals on October 19 at 1:00 p.m. “It’s a great time,” said eornerback Ike Taylor. “We have a lot of guys down. Behrend’s upcoming schedule features away games at the Goucher Invitational on Oct 1 1 and 12. They will also have a tough match at Grove City on October 18 before the AMCC championships. Grove City's team has won the PAC 21 years in a row and boasts an 8-1 record. The Behrend Women's Tennis team will look to continue their winning streak all the way to the AMCC Championships, and their Grove City matchup becomes crucial in carrying over the excitement of the regular season. r This week’s!
