BEACON SPORTS Behrend softball pushes towards 2008 postseason By Jessica Carlson sports editor jlc5018(n psu.edu With only two doubleheader conference games remaining in the Behrend softball teams regular season, the Lady Lions are looking to surge their way into the playoffs. Behrend currently poses an AMCC record of 10-4 and a strong overall record of 24-10, putting them in the No. 3 slot in the AMCC standings. Lake Erie is currently No. 1 at 15-3 fol lowed by Medaille College at No. 2 with a confer ence record of 12-2. On Wednesday. April 23, the Blue and White hit their way past Hilbert College in both games. They defeated the Hawks in game one by a score of 6-3 and then swept passed them with ease in game two 8-0. It was senior day and two Behrend players were recognized for their time an effort on the field. Seniors Lauren Lubic and Kelly Houghton were both acknowledged prior to the start of game one. Behrend got off to a hot start in the first inning w hen they took the lead 3-0. Katie Whitby, Nikki Kasehauer and Allison Babish all reached home plate. In the fifth Behrend drove three more runs in to widen their lead gap 6- 0. Rachelle Lawrence drove in a run off of an RBI triple while Maddie Wieser and Laura Frischkom each had an RBI double to drive in two more runs. Hilbert got their first hit of the game in the sixth inning, as well as driving in their first run of the game. The Hawks brought in two more runs in the seventh inning, but it would not be enough to match the early efforts of the Lady Lions as they went on to win game one 6-3. Game two did not start off quite as strong on the scoreboard; however, by the third inning the Blue and White found themselves up 3-0. Their scoring streak would continue in the fifth as Kasehauer drove a run in off of an RBI single, followed by Lubic with an RBI triple. The women would take the lead 6-0 after five inning of play. Behrend then sealed the deal in the sixth inning by knocking in two more runs as well as taking the win in game two by a score of 8-0. The next game for the Lady Lions is Saturday, April 26 against conference opponents Mt. Aloysius. The Mounties are currently 8-6 in the A w (jt w fit w I*l w* tit #j§ w* ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK NAME: SPORT: CLASS: DATE: Penn State Behrend senior golfer Dave Kostanich (Jefferson Hills/Thomas Jefferson) has been named the ENTER- PRISE RENT-A-CAR athlete of the week for the week of April 21, 2008. An AMCC All-Conference selection in the fall, Kostanich led his team to a fourth place finish at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. Dave shot a 77 during the first round of play and improved to a 76 second round action. The Behrend Lions finished the competition shooting a 639 as a team. The Blue and White will host the annual Behrend Invitational Resort on Thursday, April 24. The team will go on to play in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational for their final event of the season. The Behrend Beacon I conference, holding down the No. 5 standing just below' Pitt-Bradford. The first game is scheduled to begin at Ip.m. Following Ml. Aloysius will be Behrend softballs last regular season doubleheader against Frostburg State University. The Blue and White will travel to Frostburg to take on the Bobcats who hold a .500 record at 7-7. on Sunday. April 27. The first pitch is to be thrown at 2 p.m. Once the regular season wraps up. Behrend will be focusing in the AMCC postseason playoff tour nament to take place from May 2-4. Time and place are yet to be determined.
