"We collaborate on teaching inexperienced play ers, scheduling games, running practices and lead ing the club during games," Brackbill said. Since the club is entirely student-run, the cap tains also manage the team's money for referee fees, travel feels and league dues. The Student Government Association and Student Activity Fee provide funding, but for the most part this funding is extremely limited. The club has developed some creative fundrais ing tactics to raise money for the club. The ladies also have several t-shirt and sweatshirt sales throughout the year. The club kicked off their season on Saturday, March 24, with games against West Virginia Wesleyan, Grove City College and Slippery Rock University. They won two out of their three games for the day. Miller has high hopes for the club after the team's first few games. "We are going to do well. We have some new players that show a lot of potential, as well as a lot of promising returning players," said Miller. The team consists of both experienced and less experienced players. While many players have been playing since high school, there are several who are completely new to the sport. The majori ty of the fall semester consists of teaching rookies stick skills and the rules of the game, so they are prepared to play with the veterans before the sea son begins in the spring. Sophomore Courtney Mineweaser was new to the sport of lacross last year. Mineweaser played basketball in high school, she decided to try some thing new in college. "I came into this sport knowing nothing about it but I had great teachers and now I love the sport," said Mineweaser. "It's amazing that only last year we were a rookie team with several rookie players and we ended up 5-3 in the league. We beat the undefeated team [Kent State] in the last game of the season." The lacrosse club will play at home this month. Due to inclement weather and poor field condi tions, the only home game at this time is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18. Other home games are currently being rescheduled. All home games take place at the Behrend Fields and are 60 minutes long. T-shirts will be raffled off and free food will be provided to fans. "It's always good to beat your biggest rival at home," sophomore catcher Lindsay Baughman said. The Lady Lions started out slow in the first game but ended up coming from behind. Behrend won the game when they kept Pitt-Bradford from scoring by turning a triple play. They won the game on a sacrifice fly from Baughman that scored Nikki Kaschauer and put Behrend up 3-2. Kaschauer went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Katie Whitby ended up 2-for-3 with a run, and Sophomore pitcher Julie Koman gave up just six hits to Pitt-Bradford the entire game. As the AMCC Championship draws closer, the team will have to rely on its strengths in order to finish the season strong. Grenek says he thinks the team is strong from top to bottom. "As for the biggest strength, that would be our depth in the lineup," Grenek said. "We had a strong freshman class come in this year and add to a roster that has a lot of talent all the way through." He says that the team's depth is especially important due to the length of the season. "We have a lot of games in our season, leading to fatigue and injury, so it is extremely beneficial being able to have a number of players step up into a starting role and perform well," Grenek said. Grenek says the team is confident, and that this confidence has helped them. "The level of enthusiasm out on the court has also been a huge strength for us as of late and is the highest I've seen in my four years. This is a team that knows we are better than our record shows and we want to finish the season strong and win the AMCC's to show it." The Lions will play three conference matches in the next week, starting with a match at Frostburg on Saturday morning. The team will then play Pitt-Greensburg on back-to-back days, as they will host Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday afternoon before visiting them on Wednesday. The AMCC Championships are on April 15.
