Friday, September 9, 2005 Poogie Bell Rocks McGarvey By Stephen Finch assistant news editor The Pittsburgh-based Poogie Bell Band rocked Behrend’s world from the McGarvey Commons Thursday night. Poogie’s rock soul is blend ed flawlessly with its jazzy style. The band played two one-hour sets, led by namesake Poogie Bell on drums. The full lineup of the band features Howie Alexander on key boards, lan Gordon on horns, Kevin Barefoot on bass guitar and Juan Vasquez on lead guitar. When asked how he felt about tonight’s’ show, Poogie showed him self to be a true entertainer when he replied, “I’m always excited to play my music anywhere, for 1000 peo ple or only 1. I just want to per form.” Behrend is only the latest step for bandleader Poogie Bell. The self named band is a side-project just beginning to take on possibilities of its own for Poogie, who also plays drums for Marcus Miller’s road The Behrend Beacon is looking for new staff writers. His recently concluded European tour included a stretch of 27 straight one-night shows. His musical resume also includes recording and performing with such artists as Erykah Badu and New Edition. The Poogie Bell Band has been playing a lot of clubs in the Northeast in the past few months, such as the Blue Note Club in New York City and the Zanzibar Blue in Philadelphia. For those who missed last night’s show, they will be playing other area clubs in the near future: The Club Cafe in Pittsburgh on October Bth, The Crowbar in State College on October 19th and The Cellblock here in Erie on October 30th.
