Poogie Bell Rocks McGarvey
By Stephen Finch
assistant news editor
The Pittsburgh-based Poogie Bell
Band rocked Behrend’s world from
the McGarvey Commons Thursday
night. Poogie’s rock soul is blend
ed flawlessly with its jazzy style.
The band played two one-hour sets,
led by namesake Poogie Bell on
drums. The full lineup of the band
features Howie Alexander on key
boards, lan Gordon on horns, Kevin
Barefoot on bass guitar and Juan
Vasquez on lead guitar.
When asked how he felt about
tonight’s’ show, Poogie showed him
self to be a true entertainer when he
replied, “I’m always excited to play
my music anywhere, for 1000 peo
ple or only 1. I just want to per
form.”
Behrend is only the latest step for
bandleader Poogie Bell. The self
named band is a side-project just
beginning to take on possibilities of
its own for Poogie, who also plays
drums for Marcus Miller’s road

While there is some overlap of
Poogie’s tour dates for his own band
and Marcus Miller’s, he’s no
stranger to hard work. His recently
concluded European tour included a
stretch of 27 straight one-night
shows. His musical resume also
includes recording and performing
with such artists as Erykah Badu and
New Edition.
The Poogie Bell Band has been
playing a lot of clubs in the
Northeast in the past few months,
such as the Blue Note Club in New
York City and the Zanzibar Blue in
Philadelphia.
For those who missed last night’s
show, they will be playing other area
clubs in the near future: The Club
Cafe in Pittsburgh on October Bth,
The Crowbar in State College on
October 19th and The Cellblock here
in Erie on October 30th. For more
information about the Poogie Bell
band go to www.poogicbell.com.
