Creative Nonfiction Writer Faith Adiele, who will be speaking on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Reed 177, experi enced all of that torture in the journey to become Thailand’s first black Buddhist nun. There will be a reception in the Smith Chapel living room at 4 p.m. She will be reading from her first and so far only published book, Meeting Faith: The Forest Journals of a Black Buddhist Nun, which is highly praised and discusses all her obstacles to become a Buddhist nun. “She is a skillful writer who ap proaches unusual subjects in an unusual way,” said Dr. Holly Welker, professor of creative writing. “The reading will be very informative.” She became an ordained nun because she met a woman in Thailand who inter ested her in peace and wisdom. Although she only has one book pub lished, she had other works published in a variety of selections, which include the following: O Magazine, Essence, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Fourth Genre, Creative Nonfiction, The Bud dhist Review, and numerous anthologies. All of these publications led her to pub lish her first book. “The title of Adiele’s book, Meeting Faith, is extremely apt because the book not only tells her personal story but also addresses larger issues on faith in one self in the divine in humanity,” said Welker. “Her work demonstrates how quest for self-knowledge can evolve into a quest for spiritual growth and vice versa.” She has received a number of awards for her excellent works including UNESCO, PEN New England, Yaddo, Crab Orchad Review, Creative Nonfic tion, Foundation, and Zora Neale Hurson/Richard White foundation to name a few. She also holds a number of degrees from a variety of schools. She holds a BA in Southeast Asian Studies at Harvard College, an MA in Creative Writing from Leslie College, and MFAs from the University of lowa in both Fic tion and Non-fiction. Mary Poston, BBACC 03 Olympic skater teaches at Behrend By Laura Spencer staff writer Do you think you can be the next Scott Hamilton or Kristi Yamaguchi? Want to learn a double lutz, what about a triple axel? Why not give it a try? Behrend is now offering a figure skating class taught by U.S. National and World medalist Caryn Kadavy. The class is offered at the J.M.C Ice Arena from 8:30-10:45 a.m. and at 11:00-12:15 p.m. The class is held every Tuesday and Thursday fulfilling three physical education credits. Erie’s hometown Kadavy is back at home to teach the sport that she loves so much. Since the age of four Kadavy knew that skating was her passion; her family had a membership to a local ice rink. Kadavy said, “My dad’s side of the family went skating on holidays. I was on double runners when I was two years old”. As an Olympic contender, Kadavy practiced six hours a day, six days a week in order to be a top competitor. Currently, Kadavy practices an hour and a half a day along with off-ice train ing, such as running. Recently she has participated in the Brian Boitono Skat ing Spectacular, Scott Hamilton’s Christ mas Special, and a tribute to composer Burt Bacharach. This year’s line up in cludes a tribute Andre Bocelli, Kristi Yamaguchi’s ice show, both in Novem ber and a tribute to Kenny Loggins in December. Look forward to watching Kadavy at these shows that will air on NBC in December. If you enjoy skating but your idea of stopping is ramming into the boards.. .no problem! Kadavy offers the class to stu dents with a variety of skating experi ence from beginner to highly developed. Kadavy is excited to be teaching at Behrend, “I’m thrilled about the oppor tunity. I’m learning a lot. [The students] effort level has been really high. By the third class I’ve seen improvement”. Kadavy is grateful to have this oppor tunity to give back to others what she gained from the sport. “I’ve really en joyed the technical side, the creative side of skating. I enjoy giving that to others. It keeps the chain going” said Kadavy. So if you have always had an interest in figure skating or would like to give it a try, what better way then to learn from a pro?
