Page 12 The Behrend Beacon Lady Lions maintain winning streak Win over Frostburg improves AMCC record to 4-0 by Kevin Fiorenzo sports editor The women's basketball team maintained it's winning ways this week with a strong win against Frostburg on Saturday and a nonconference victory over Mount Aloysius. On Wednesday, the Lady Lions hosted Mount Aloysius as they tried to extend their winning streak of six straight games. Mount Aloysius was able to stay competitive for most of the first half and the score at haltime was a tight 25-21 score in favor of Behrend. The Lady Lions were able to hold down Mount Aloysius' offense and win by a sizable margin as well as pick up their seventh straight win. Leading the way for Behrend was senior guard Erika Mozdy with 17 points and six rebounds. Also contributing was freshman forward Tenesha Aden with 10 points. Mount Aloysius' leading scorer was Missy Wertz with 19 points. Freshman guard Brittany Mays said, " I think we just came out with a better drive in the second half against Mount Aloysius." The previous Saturday, the Lady Lions had another home game against conference opponent Frostburg State. Behrend held the lead over the Lady Bobcats for the entire game and was in control throughout. The Lady Lions also got solid contributions from several players as four scored in double figures. Sophomore guard Nikki Pacinelli led the way with 15 points and four rebounds. Aden followed close behind, scoring 13 points and shooting 6-9 Men's basketball team continues its winning ways against Frostburg State by Ray Immekus staff writer The men's basketball team went 3-0 last week, improving it's record to 13-1 over all and 4-0 in the AMCC. The Lions have won six straight games following their only loss of the season against Skidmore at the Daytona Beach Classic on Dec. 30. Senior center James Curren was given Player of the Week honors in the AMCC this week after he lead the Lions to con ference victories over Lake Erie and Frostburg State. Curren is currently ranked No. 2 in scoring (17.8 ppg) and rebound ing (8.5 rpg) in the AMCC. Behrend began their week with a tele vised home game against the Frostburg State Bobcats on Saturday. The Bobcats came into Saturday's contest with a 6-7 record and I-I conference mark. After a cold-shooting first half, the Li ons found themselves down by four at half time, 23-19. Behrend shot only 23.lper cent from the field, and only 1-9 from the Defense and free throws kept Behrend close in the first half. The Lions made six of eight from the charity stripe. The Bob cats made 40 percent of their shots, but only one for eight from downtown. Senior forward David Hairston said, "We played really tight in the first half. We tried to come out in the second half playing hard and take the game." Behrend traveled from one extreme to the other in the second half, making 14-21 from the field and two-five from the three-point arc. Frostburg went cold, making only 29.3 percent of their shots. Hot shooting and strong defense enabled the Lions to take the lead and eventually pull away for a 57-46 victory. Hairston said, "We're playing really well as a team. We know what we're trying to accomplish." Curren led the team in scoring again with 23 points. He added 10 rebounds to record the double double. Senior forward Casey Ponsoll added 11 points and three boards in the winning effort. Their next conference game is on Saturday against La Roche at 8 p.m. at the Junker Center. with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Behrend's second victory of the week came against Medaille on Wednesday night. The Lions dominated the game and won by a score of 60-28. Curren once again led the Lions with 15 points. Jared Clough added 10 points and 10 boards for Behrend. "I think we're a very cohesive team. We really started to click against Frostburg," said Mays. With the two wins this week, the Behrend squad improved to 12-4 overall and 4-0 in the AMCC. They are also currently a half game ahead of Pitt-Greensburg for the lead in the conference. For a team that had several injuries to start the season, they are steadily moving in the right direction toward success. "I think a key to our success has been our togetherness. We can take criticism from each other and then just leave it on the court," said Mays. One of the keys this season to the Lions' success has been the stellar play of the freshmen players. Mays and Aden have steadily established themselves as essential parts of the team and have put up some strong statistics. Aden was this week's Housing and Food Service Athlete of the Week as she averaged 18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds for the week. Mays is currently averaging 11.3 ppg and 5.5 rpg. The Behrend squad will next go up against conference opponent La Roche in a home game on Saturday. Following that will be a trip to Pitt-Greensburg in a game that has strong implications as to who will lead the conference. Mays said, "We can't underestimate anything. These are two games that we need to come out and win." There's no selfishness on this team," said Hairston The Lions next two games will be at home on Saturday against La Roche, and Monday versus Oberlin. The team will then travel to Pitt- Greensburg on Wednesday for a conference matchup. "La Roche and Pitt-Greensburg are both very ath letic. Coach draws up an in bound play, Matty Keith caught it, the bail almost hits the rafters, comes down, we go to overtime and then we win. Beacon: What is your favorite memory off the court? Hairston: Every time the basketball team goes out or hangs out, we always have good memories (Laughter) Too many too count. Beacon: How would you sell your team to a recruit? Hairston: When I do get recruits, what I tell them that s good about our team is that we are all close. We re going to back each other up no matter what. That s off the court, and, bring it on on the court. That s why our record is the way it is. Beacon: What is a little known fact about you or a little known talent that you possess? Hairston: A little known talent that I have that not many people would know is that I play the piano. I ye been playing since I was five. Most of the time I just play around, but when I do play pieces I play a lot of Boyz II Men-type stuff. Jazz is probably my most preferred style. Beacon: What are your plans for after gradua tion? Hairston: Right now, l m considering grad schools for my MBA. (Laughter) If not, hopefully I It get a job in plastics engineering. Beacon: What sold you on choosing Behrend?
