Lady Lions maintain winning streak
Win over Frostburg improves AMCC record to 4-0
by Kevin Fiorenzo

The women's basketball team maintained it's
winning ways this week with a strong win
against Frostburg on Saturday and a
nonconference victory over Mount Aloysius.
On Wednesday, the Lady Lions hosted Mount
Aloysius as they tried to extend their winning
streak of six straight games.
Mount Aloysius was able to stay competitive
for most of the first half and the score at haltime
was a tight 25-21 score in favor of Behrend.
The Lady Lions were able to hold down Mount
Aloysius' offense and win by a sizable margin
as well as pick up their seventh straight win.
Leading the way for Behrend was senior guard
Erika Mozdy with 17 points and six rebounds.
Also contributing was freshman forward Tenesha
Aden with 10 points. Mount Aloysius' leading
scorer was Missy Wertz with 19 points.
Freshman guard Brittany Mays said, " I think
we just came out with a better drive in the second
half against Mount Aloysius."
The previous Saturday, the Lady Lions had
another home game against conference opponent
Frostburg State.
Behrend held the lead over the Lady Bobcats
for the entire game and was in control
throughout. The Lady Lions also got solid
contributions from several players as four scored
in double figures.
Sophomore guard Nikki Pacinelli led the way
with 15 points and four rebounds. Aden followed
close behind, scoring 13 points and shooting 6-9

The men's basketball team went 3-0 last
week, improving it's record to 13-1 over
all and 4-0 in the AMCC. The Lions have
won six straight games following their only
loss of the season against Skidmore at the
Daytona Beach Classic on Dec. 30.
Senior center James Curren was given
Player of the Week honors in the AMCC
this week after he lead the Lions to con
ference victories over Lake Erie and
Frostburg State. Curren is currently ranked
No. 2 in scoring (17.8 ppg) and rebound
ing (8.5 rpg) in the AMCC.
Behrend began their week with a tele
vised home game against the Frostburg
State Bobcats on Saturday. The Bobcats
came into Saturday's contest with a 6-7
record and I-I conference mark.
After a cold-shooting first half, the Li
ons found themselves down by four at half
time, 23-19. Behrend shot only 23.lper
cent from the field, and only 1-9 from the
Defense and free throws kept Behrend
close in the first half. The Lions made six
of eight from the charity stripe. The Bob
cats made 40 percent of their shots, but only
one for eight from downtown.
Senior forward David Hairston said, "We
played really tight in the first half. We tried
to come out in the second half playing hard
and take the game."
Behrend traveled from one extreme to the
other in the second half, making 14-21 from
the field and two-five from the three-point
arc. Frostburg went cold, making only 29.3
percent of their shots. Hot shooting and
strong defense enabled the Lions to take the lead
and eventually pull away for a 57-46 victory.
Hairston said, "We're playing really well as a
team. We know what we're trying to accomplish."
Curren led the team in scoring again with 23
points. He added 10 rebounds to record the double
double. Senior forward Casey Ponsoll added 11
points and three boards in the winning effort.

with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Behrend's second victory of the week came
against Medaille on Wednesday night. The Lions
dominated the game and won by a score of 60-28.
Curren once again led the Lions with 15 points.
Jared Clough added 10 points and 10 boards for
Behrend.

the same goal and we know what to do to win.

rebounds.
"I think we're starting to play well as a
team. We really started to click against
Frostburg," said Mays.
With the two wins this week, the Behrend
squad improved to 12-4 overall and 4-0 in
the AMCC. They are also currently a half
game ahead of Pitt-Greensburg for the lead
in the conference. For a team that had
several injuries to start the season, they are
steadily moving in the right direction toward
success.
"I think a key to our success has been our
togetherness. We can take criticism from
each other and then just leave it on the
court," said Mays.
One of the keys this season to the Lions'
success has been the stellar play of the
freshmen players. Mays and Aden have
steadily established themselves as essential
parts of the team and have put up some
strong statistics.
Aden was this week's Housing and Food
Service Athlete of the Week as she averaged
18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds for the week.
Mays is currently averaging 11.3 ppg and
5.5 rpg.
The Behrend squad will next go up
against conference opponent La Roche in a
home game on Saturday. Following that
will be a trip to Pitt-Greensburg in a game
that has strong implications as to who will
lead the conference.
Mays said, "We can't underestimate
anything. These are two games that we need to
come out and win."
There's no selfishness on this team," said Hairston
The Lions next two games will be at home on
Saturday against La Roche, and Monday versus
Oberlin. The team will then travel to Pitt-
Greensburg on Wednesday for a conference
matchup.
"La Roche and Pitt-Greensburg are both very ath
letic. We'll have to bring our A-game and not have
any letdowns," said Hairston.

Hairston: It was at Pitt-Greensburg in my sopho
more year. We were down by three with like five
seconds left in the game. Coach draws up an in
bound play, Matty Keith caught it, the bail almost
hits the rafters, comes down, we go to overtime and
then we win.
Beacon: What is your favorite memory off the
court?
Hairston: Every time the basketball team goes out
or hangs out, we always have good memories
(Laughter) Too many too count.
Beacon: How would you sell your team to a
recruit?
Hairston: When I do get recruits, what I tell them
that s good about our team is that we are all close.
We re going to back each other up no matter what.
That s off the court, and, bring it on on the court.
That s why our record is the way it is.
Beacon: What is a little known fact about you
or a little known talent that you possess?
Hairston: A little known talent that I have that not
many people would know is that I play the piano.
I ye been playing since I was five. Most of the time
I just play around, but when I do play pieces I play
a lot of Boyz II Men-type stuff. Jazz is probably
my most preferred style.
Beacon: What are your plans for after gradua
tion?
Hairston: Right now, l m considering grad schools
for my MBA. (Laughter) If not, hopefully I It get a
job in plastics engineering.
Beacon: What sold you on choosing Behrend?
Hairston: Coach Niland is a really good recruiter.
Matty Keith showed me around and I had a really
good time with him. I wanted to stay close to my
