All the team members worked together this past weekend to put two more wins in the books. Quickly approaching the last week of the fall season, the women's tennis team was able to round up two wins out of their last three matches. On Sat urday, Sept. 28, they traveled to Mary land to defeat Frostburg, 7-2. Winning singles matches were freshman Am ber Weckoski (6-0, 6-2), sophomore Christine Leininger (2-6, 6-4, 6-2), sophomore Margaret Venema (6-0, 6- 0), and freshman Amy Frizzell (6-1. 6-3). The doubles teams on Saturday overcame the Frostburg team in eight game pro-sets, with the talented com binations of senior Lennys Redondo and Amber Weckoski (8-2), Christine Leininger and Becky Snyder (8-0) and Margaret Venema and Amy Frizzell (8- 0). Continuing play on Sept. 29, the women's team's momentum was tern porarily halted as they suffered another loss in a conference match to rivals [] IDIsiDIiI (ql ii thrives in overtime .;~. Goalkeeper Jake Hordych has been a wall, allowing only two goals in the past two weeks . He is back-to-back AMCC Goalkeeper of the Week. By Zoe Rose sports editor The Behrend men's soccer team turned its future around with a 3-0 win over Pitt-Bradford and even more remarkably, the 2-1 double overtime win over La Roche last Saturday. On Wednesday, the Blue and White challenged Grove City on the Wolverines home turf, earning a 1-1 double overtime tie. The Wolverines fell behind during the first half of action on a goal by sophomore defensive midfielder Jeff Morris 34 minutes into the game. Behrend was all about offensive action as they out -shot Grove City 28-7. However, they were able to turn the heat up on Wednesday, Oct. 2 in a con ference match against La Roche. A 7- 0 victory brought their record up to 3- 2. With a light breeze and warm tem peratures, it seemed as if even the weather was on the Lions side. Playing number one singles for Behrend was Weckoski, who crushed her opponent in 6-0, 6-0 victory. In the number two spot was Leininger with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Continuing Weckoski's path of de struction were singles winners Frizzell and Zoe Rose, both pulling out similar 6-0, 6-0 victories. Becky Snyder ended up with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win. The doubles arrangementmgedlo be just as successful, with b—ms coming around with victories. In eight •••,- game pro-sets, the combinations of freshmen Weckoski and Frizzell (8-2), and Leininger and Snyder (8-0) brought the team to their 7-0 win, the first complete defeat for the women's team all season. The next challenge for the team will come when it faces Thiel on Saturday, October 5 at 9 a.m. Coach Jeff Barger is very optimistic going into the week end, with the goal of getting ready for the AMCC Tournament taking place on Perritano said, " We need to work on finishing opportunities. We had good scoring opportunities." Against La Roche in double overtime, sophomore midfielder Andy McCormick and junior midfielder Andy Laver scored the goals for Behrend. The men's soccer race will heat up this Saturday as Behrend will travel to face Pitt- Greensburg (2-0), this will be a match of the two undefeated teams in the conference. With this huge conference game looming, one where the opponent has won all 10 of their ten games, Perritano knows his team is up to the challenge. "We are very excited to play," Perritano said. " We will have to play our hest matches to heat them." named AMCC Goalkeeper of the Week for the second week in the row. Hordych made 19 saves in the opening conference games for the Lions. He shut out Pitt-Bradford and then held La Roche to a single goal. Pitt-Bradford was his first shut out since the first game of the season against Lebanon Valley. Last year, Hordych earned second team all-conference and posted five shut outs. Following Pitt-Greensburg, the Lions will host four games starting with Lake Erie, Bethany, Buffalo State, and finally Penn State Altoona. Last week, Erin Maurer led the Behrend team in win ning two straight conference matches. The Behrend Lions then played on the road Saturday, where Maurer netted the game-winning goal in Behrend's thrilling 1-0 victory over La Roche.
