John Telliho Mathematics, 05 History professor Pieper brings unique cultural perspective to Behrend by Derek Pangallo staff writer New to the history department this year is Jadwiga Pieper. She has a doctorate in Global/Comparative History/Latin American History and Gender History from Rutgers and comes to Penn State Erie from Montclair State University in New Jersey; she taught at both Rutgers and Montclair for almost a decade. Born in Muenster, Westphalia, Germany, Pieper went to school in a traditional gymnasium (Ger man High-School equivalent) graduating with specialties in French, World Arts, and Math. Living in a rather non-traditional Westphalia PERILL "La Deuxieme Sexe" was inspired by Perillo's reading of the book by that same title, written by Simone de Beauvoir. The poem recalls the attempts by her and her colleagues to unravel the mysteries of this text during a camping trip. While introducing "On the High Suicide Rate of Dentists," Perillo told the audience she had had her fillings removed because they contained mercury, which was purported to cause Multiple Sclerosis, from which she suffers. The final two poems, "The Salmon Underneath Poet Lucia Perillo reads Thursday night. Perillo was the first writer featured in the Creative Writing Speaker Series. A!pqr- "Yes, because it brings back the sadness and fear that we felt the first time we watched it." Maureen Archer Marketing, 03 family, the customary practice was for young women to spend time abroad before embarking on the next project of higher education. After completing her degree, Pieper spent a year in Mexico, first with a Mexican family in the capi tal. then spending time in different provinces. There, she found the desire to learn about the roots of the many cultures at home in Mexico a curi osity she could act upon when accepted as a stu dent at the Free University Berlin. Moving from Mexico hack to Germany, she studied journalism and Latin American history and politics. Through her studies in journalism she became involved with Pacifica Radio, and wrote her the the City" and "Eulogy Behind the KFC" both involved the salmon in Olympia, the latter against the backdrop of Sept. 11. After the reading, Perillo invited the audience to purchase one of her books, which she remained on-hand to autograph. The next reader in the series is Alan Michael Parker, a poet who taught at Behrend in the 19905. From Berlin, the Big Apple did not seem far and broadcast ing brought her to New York City. Pieper spent more than a decade living in Man hattan, first with a German Fellowship, studying to get her degree at City College (CUNY) and ultimately with a Fellowship to complete a Doc torate at Rutgers. To that end, she lived and stud ied in Chile, where she spent two years in the ar chives of Santiago, or in interview sessions with Chileans who had lived through the dramatic po litical changes the country had undergone since t hel97os. • Pieper said she finds Behrend interesting, much different from New York. She also said that Erie is surprisingly varied: a place of beautiful nature, trees and a marvelous lake, but also an urban area that reveals the melancholy of the wealth and pride of better times long gone.
