Karl Benacci, Features Editor Don’t drink the water when Poison the Well conies to Erie by Kevin Fallon asst, news editor The first time Poison the Well played in Erie a few years ago, it was before a crowd of about 15 people. The empty room didn’t faze the band members; they played with the same emotion and energy that currently has them packing venues. Since that first Erie show, a lot has happened for Poison the Well. They put out two albums, including the recently released “Tear From The Red” on Trustkill Records. The album went to No. 1 one on the College Media Journal (CMJ) charts. They also toured extensively, including a second appearance in Erie, this time to an enthusiastic crowd of a few hundred kids. Not too shabby for an underground hardcore band. On Monday, Poison the Well will grace Erie with its third appearance. “Erie is one of our favorite places to play because the kids are cool and supportive of the underground music scene,” said guitarist Ryan Primack. Poison the Well, which formed in 1998 in Coral Gables, Fla., plays a melodic brand of metallic hardcore that is both emotional and heavy. The music is often dark but the lyrics profoundly poetic. And those emotions come out when Poison the Well plays live. “Our live show is kind of crazy,” said Primack. “Playing a show is like therapy for us because you get rid of all that’s bothering you. Some people go to a psychiatrist; we play a show.” Poison the Well said that even though they have had some success, Through the Looking Glass THANKS FOR YOUR HELP, GOTTA GO! The victim promptly stole the Good Samaritan’s Ford Escort and drove it about two miles before crashing again. When a man in a pickup truck stopped to help at that accident, the guy stole his truck. The cops finally stopped him by shooting out the pickup’s front tire. We want to do our own thing ‘without MTV. We don’t want to be on TRL or be sponsored by the Gap. That stuff is unimportant to us.” What is important to Poison the Well? The answer is simple: playing music. The band insists the only reason it exists is for the love of music “We are five idiots that started a the weekly column that asks if there is intelligent life out there by Mike Pingree KRT Campus 53 Breaks suddenly 55 Minuscule 57 Venetian villain 59 Building site 60 NASA’s ISS partner features A FUNNIES Friday, April 12, 2002 band. It said the key to its latest success was experimenting with different sounds, and, of course, keeping it real. “The point of music is to stay original,” said Primack. “There are too many bands out there that are cookie-cutter bands. They are five schmucks that are told what to play. But the music lacks honesty.
