Davids by Jeanine Noce assistant sports editor Jay Davids is jumping, running and relaying for Behrend's track and field team. His personality and leadership are definitely going to help this year's team to succeed in every event. After breaking the 800-meter relay record, Davids is convinced that he can break the high jump and 4x400 relay records as well. With his dedication and hard work, these two tasks could be easily accomplished. "I was really tired, but very excited when I broke the record," said Davids. This past Saturday, he broke Behrend's school record in the Western Pennsylvania Championships, which were held at Geneva College. Davids' record breaking time was 2.01.39. Davids competes in the high jump, the 800 m and is on the 4x400 relay team. Davids has come to Behrend from Wattsburg, Pennsylvania and has a dual major of accounting and MIS (Management Information Systems). He started competing on a track and field team during his junior year at Seneca High School and lettered for two years. During his freshman and sophomore years he was a member of the baseball and basketball teams. His coach then asked him to try out for the track and field team because of his speed. He competed in the high, long and triple jump events in high school. This is his fourth year competing at the college level. During his freshman year the track and field team was just getting started as a club sport. "I definitely enjoy being part of the team due to the fact that it takes up so much time that all of the members become my family. They are all a great group of people," said Davids. The head coach, Rich Hoffman, and the assistant coach, Nate Wiley, are also very helpful. He works with Hoffman for the high jump practices and with Wiley for the running practices. His favorite experience was during spring break last year when the team traveled to Florida to the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports Complex. The team members trained individually for one week and then competed against nine schools on the final day. Davids took second place in the high jump and received a medal. Thus far this year, the team has traveled as far as Cleveland and Pittsburgh to compete. ~ ~a~ ~~~ ~~; . ~~ His highest jump thus far is 6'2" and his relay team's record for the 4x400 is 3.26.7 which was also run at the Westyrn Pennsylvania Championships. Dave Ober, Greg Cooper and Garret Arndt are the other three members on the relay team. He has three goals for the remainder of the season. The first is to break Behrend's record in the high jump with above 6'4". Also, Davids wants to break two minutes in the 800-meter run, and wants to get his split in the 4x400 relay to fifty-one seconds.
