Halaszynski runs the steeplechase for the track and field team by Jeanine Noce assistant sports editor Dennis Halaszynski is running the 3000- meter steeplechase race for the Penn State Behrend track and field team. This senior, along with the team's other 26 members, hopes to win an AMCC (Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference) title this year. With the experience and knowledge from Halaszynski, the team has a chance to qualify. The steeplechase consists of seven laps with five three-foot hurdles to jump per lap. However, after the last hurdle, the runner jumps into water. The steeplechase is almost two miles long and can be difficult with the addition of water to the hurdle portion of the Being a member of track and field during his sophomore, junior, and senior years at McKeesport High School has definitely been an advantage. During high school, Halaszynski, now a political science major with a minor in international studies, was a member of the varsity track and field team. Halaszynski has also run track and field during all four years here for Behrend. He enjoys being a part of the team and will definitely miss running after graduation. He also believes that the track and field coach Rich Hoffman is extremely helpful. Hoffman is the long distance running coach and helps Halaszynski with all of his practices. "Halaszynski is running very well this season. He had a good indoor season which will translate into a good outdoor season. He is also one of the hardest workers on the team and leads by example, - said Hoffman. "I tend to work better with stress, believe it or not," said Halaszynski. Along with practicing and running seven days a week, Halaszynski has been a member of the indoor track and field team and the cross-country team during the past four years. He also works at the Penn State Behrend maintenance building. He believes that it is not extremely difficult to balance track and field, schoolwork and working; instead Halaszynski believes that it schedules his time better. His favorite experience during his four years here at Behrend was during this past fall's cross-country season when the team won the AMCC title. Halaszynski and several other members of the track and field team traveled to Disney World in Orlando, Fla. last season. They attended the Wide World of Sports Training Complex and competed against 10 other colleges. As a whole, the members placed relatively well in each of the races. Halaszynski is also happy with his fastest time thus far for the steeplechase race. His best time is 10:18 and he hopes to improve on this throughout the rest of the season The track and field team typically stays in the Tri-State area, which consists of Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. The team's next meet is Saturday, at 10:00 a.m. Halaszynski and the team will be traveling to Case Western Reserve to compete in the invitational.
