Young water polo team experiences rough waters by Abigail Long sports editor Tough competition continues to dominate the women’s water polo team. After the games the team has played, their record is just 0-5. The first season of water polo here has proved to be challenging. In the first four games, Behrend played two Division I schools, one Division II school, and only one fellow Division 111 school. Two of these teams, Michigan and Indiana, are ranked in the top 20 in the nation. So, the competition has definitely improved Behrend’s game, but it does not show in the record books. Also, with spring break, the beginners lost valuable practice time, as well as three starters for the Mary Good, a senior on the water polo team, tries to get the ball from the defender. She plays the position of hole player for the team this year. Two losses were recorded by scores of 2-13 and 7-16 respectively. Their fifth match of the season was played March 14, versus Marist College. Marist’s offense was unstoppable as they dominated the Lions 9-23. With a new team, the first few games are crucial to learning the game rules as well as obtaining much needed game experience. This first season has been a learning experience for all involved before, are learning fast, and show excitement in both games and practices. The coach is working on teaching more game strategies as well as drills. Also, in this rough, highly physical sport, Coach Heynes is encouraging the team to be aggressive in game situations. This aggressiveness also comes along with experience, something the team is lacking. The team has been practicing both mornings and afternoons plus Saturdays. With the new sport, the team was unable to properly schedule their classes. Therefore, there is some trouble with getting the team together for full practices. Swimming, drills, passing, C.R. However, the eager players willingly put in individual practice time in order to better their game. Gannon has been a great help by practicing with the team. This has given the team the opportunity to see more playing styles and increase their intensity. Coach Heynes slated, "when you practice with your own team it is not as intense as it is with another, so they [Gannon| have been a great asset to us."
