Behrend to get a visit from a Jazz Legend by Jermaine Hardy features co-editor On Monday, January 15,2001. at 7:30 pm in Reed Union Building Commons, the students and faculty of Behrend will have the opportu nity to enjoy beautiful music and a speech from the premier modern jazz pianist, Ellis Marsalis. The evening promises to be moving with both rhythm and inspirational words. As an educator and musi cian of jazz, Marsalis has played an integral role in the establishing and flourishing of modern jazz music. Inspiring his sons Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo, and Jason, the Marsalis family has brought jazz to the forefront in New Orleans. Marsalis was horn on November 14, 1934, in Gert Town Louisiana. He began his formal music educa tion at Xavier University Junior High School at age 11. In high school he switched from playing the tenor sax to the piano. After high school he enrolled at Dillard Univer- Waterfront Restaurant provides a nice atmosphere for diners by Karl Benaccci features co-editor Not too long ago, I had the chance to go to the Waterfront Restaurant, which is located on State Street on the dock. Upon arrival at the restaurant, I noticed that the inside of the restaurant was quite nice, with a classy atmosphere. However, the illumination given from the lights was not nearly enough, forcing me to ask the waiter for a flashlight. I was not given a flashlight, so I had to strain my eyes while trying to read the menu. Another thing that added to the annoyance was that my party was seated next to a window with a view of parked cars along the street. When it came time for ordering dinner, I noticed that there were not a lot of beverage selections on the menu (other than wine, which I cannot drink anyway since I'm not yet 21) so I asked the waiter if they served milkshakes and he kindly 11 Meet the Chapter sity and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in music education. As a lecturer at Xavier University and an adjunct teacher at Loyola University, he soon became New Orleans' leading jazz educator. He enrolled in the graduate program at Loyola University and graduated with a masters of music education. With his work as a teacher at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, he had a great influence on the face of New Orleans jazz, groom ing some of the city's most respected jazz artists. In 1989 Marsalis was honored by Dillard University with an honorary Doctorate of Music. Marsalis has recorded 32 albums as well as pro duced several video projects, includ ing "The Seductress" and "King Midas." Today his music influences jazz fans and artists all over the world. He has won several awards and today holds the Coca Cola Jazz Chair as Director of the Jazz Stud ies Division at the University of New Orleans. agreed to arrange for one to be made. For an appetizer, I chose to order a cup of clam chowder soup. It tasted quite good, and I regretted not ordering a whole bowl. Upon finishing my soup, I ordered my main course, which consisted of breaded perch, french fries, and a small piece of broccoli. I am pleased to say that the perch was quite good, however, the portions that I received were not nearly enough. The cost of my dining at the Waterfront was approximately $20.00, so the price was not completely ridiculous, however not very cheap either. The Waterfront is a nice restaurant to go to, due to its location. However, in the future, I would advise anyone planning to make reservations to the Waterfront to ask for a table that has a nice view of the bay. I give the Waterfront ** 1/2 stars.
