FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2000 Behrend student proposes marriage by Katie Galley editorial page editor Wedding bells are chiming on the Behrend campus for two of its students. On Wednesday, October 18, Behrend senior Tyler Travis proposed to long time girlfriend Kristine Di Marzo, also a senior. In room 101 of the Science Building, during their Understanding the Bases of Human Disease class, Travis got down on one knee and asked Di Marzo to marry him. With the entire class in anticipation of the answer, Di Marzo quietly accepted. A demonstration on chicken pox transmission was used as the cover to get Di Marzo to the front of the room without suspicion. Working with Professor Brian McKeon, Travis stood back to back with Di Marzo as McKeon told the students that one of the pair would be given a command and the other must not turn around until told. Travis used the opportunity to pull the ring from his pocket and get down on one knee. McKeon told the other half of the partners to turn around, which Di Marzo did, completely missing the fact that Travis was kneeling down in front of her. "She looked right past me," Travis said. When Di Marzo finally saw Travis in front of her, she was in shock, hut accepted his proposal. She said yes. who is a Lecturer of Biology, Travis planned the proposal for a month before going through with it. Talking in codes was the only way that the two could communicate about it in front of DiMarzo. "Tyler would come up to me and say 'did you see that CBS special last night?'" McKeon said. Di Marzo admitted that his behavior had been weird, but she simply thought it was just brown- nosing. Travis and Di Marzo have been dating for three years and met in the Behrend library. Travis wanted to In 1998, the Behrend Lions were 8-9 under the rookie coach. Last season they set a school record for wins with a 17-2 overall mark and a perfect 10- 0 AMCC record. The Behrend Lions are currently 17-2 and 7-0 in the conference. tennis Statistical leaders include Julie Leininger with 17 singles wins and Jamie Brubaker with 16 singles wins. While he asked her out for their first date on the couches in the lobby of the Science building, the General Education class they share together seemed like the perfect place to propose. Travis, who is from Edinboro, and Di Marzo, who is from Fairview, are both 22 and Psychology majors. Di Marzo graduates Behrend in December and Travis graduates in May.
