His players are Penn But this weekend, something else will belong to Penn State.. .the 2000 NFL Draft. The Nittany Lions two defensive forces, LaVar Arrington and Courtney Brown, enter this weekend’s NFL Draft with the chance of being drafted number one and two in the first round. Both these Penn State powers come off career years for Paterno’s squad w ho ended up crumbling when the pressure got too high late last season. However, the only teams crumbling this weekend will be the ones that dare pass up the opportunity to pick up the top two defensive players in college football. Football fans will always brag when their team gets the first pick, but will hide when the player they get proves to be unproductive in the higher level of the NFL. I would assume the Browns would take LaVar Arrington as their first pick. Arrington is fast, strong and unpredictable, everything the poor Cleveland franchise lacks now. The Redskins, however, don’t have as difficult a task, as they have the opportunity to take whichever Penn Stater that the Browns pass up, or both, and some other risky player. The 2000 draft will lack in quarterback potential for the first time in two years. After the Peyton Manning vs. Ryan Leaf debate of’9B and the Tim Couch vs. Akili Smith question in '99, the decision of 2000 would be Chad Pennington vs. Chris Redman. Who? That's my point. Another name that popped up during the 1999 college football season was Wisconsin’s Ron Dayne. Very similar to the style of Ricky Williams, Dayne’s talent is in question because of the Williams disaster in New Orleans last season and the rise of agile, not powerful, running backs. Marshall Faulk and Edgerrin James proved last season that smaller and quicker athletes are taking the position from the big and behre|| CLASSIEp The Beacon is looking to fill several editorial positions next semester. The problem lies in the fact that college football is still dominated by the larger backs, which makes draft day very interesting when teams pick players like James instead of college record breakers like Williams and Dayne. Many things are changing with teams’ motivations on draft day since just a couple of years ago. But one thing that isn’t changing is Penn State’s influence in the draft. Paterno’s players have always made an impact in the NFL. It’s just not normal to have fierce players like Arrington and Brown available in one NFL Draft. Thinking of you...
