The Behrend Beacon OVER THE EDGE Housing and Food Service Athlete of the Week Mandy Bodnor has been named this week’s Housing and Food Service Athlete of the week. Last week, Bodnor led the Behrend Lions to a pair of AMCC wins over Pitt-Greensburg. In the game against the Bobcats she pitched a one-hitter with Bk’s in the 9-1 victory. At the plate she was 1-2 with a three RBI double. In game two she was 4-4 at the plate with 4 runs scored, a pair of doubles and held UPG scoreless in 2 1/3 in nings of relief. The Lions have entered the home stretch toward the AMCC tournament and have some key games ahead. As of right now the men are 3-2 in the AMCC and 17-11 overall. Behrend continues to move up in the AMCC standings and made sig nificant strides on Saturday by defeat ing conference rival Pitt-Greensburg. The men faced off against Pitt- Greensburg in a doubleheader and Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference dealt the Bobcats a pair of losses. The Lions shutout the Bobcats the first game, 5-0, and went on to win the second game 6-4. The men continued their success on Tuesday versus Pitt-Bradford. Con sidering that the Lions only have two conference games remaining on their schedule, each AMCC eame is cru- cial in Behrend’s quest for the con- ference crown With the wins over Pitt-Greensburg fresh in their mind, Behrend un leashed on Pitt-Bradford. The Lions ended up scoring 13 runs, en route to a 13-0 shutout. Several Behrend players continue to excel on the mound and at the plate. Senior Ryan Frederick has been stel lar in his three starts on the mound. Frederick, who is Behrend’s career leader in strike outs with 138, con tinues his outstanding play this year with a 1.24 ERA and one shutout. Freshman Thomas Aldrich leads the team in several pitching catego ries. He leads all Behrend pitchers with 40 strikeouts and has only al lowed 28 hits over 33 innings pitched. Charles Sevin has held Behrend’s opponents to only nine runs over 22 1/3 innings pitched. Sevin has com piled a 1.57 ERA and sat down 14 batters in 12 games appearances. Softball begins play after unexpected game cancellations victory against Pitt-Greensburg. Due to inclement weather, two .a. a cancelled ttv >k. Sports At the plate. Jake Boyle leads the squad with a .415 batting average. Boyle has 28 RBl's and 5 home runs. Senior Jeremy Brubaker continues to excel this season. Brubaker is av eraging .355 and has plated 15 base runners in 93 at bats. Overall, the Lions are out hitting and out pitching their opponents. Behrend is averaging .325 from the plate and the team only has 100 strikeouts. In addition, the men have stolen 58 bases, which is 30 more than their opponents. On the mound, Behrend is nearly one run better than their competition. The Lions also have allowed 38 fewer hits and have 42 more strikeouts than their opponents The men will continue their AMCC stretch this coming week when they play Frostburg on April 15 and visit Pitt-Greensburg on April 17. PHOTO BY JEFF MILLER 4 ' // S w - "'K , ' s Track team fares well amidst tough conditions by Tim Denial staff writer The Behrend men’s and women's track and field team traveled to Wheel ing, West Virginia, on Saturday, April Bth. The conditions weren't the best for an outdoor meet but that didn't stop the track team from competing. Despite the dreary conditions, Tommie Stovall set a school record in the 200 meter dash. His record set ting time of 23.15 earned him a fifth place at the Wheeling Jesuit Invite. Behrend's 4 X 100 relay was just one second off the first place finisher and took the silver medal in the race. Jay Davids once again did his part in the high jump by taking first place with a leap of 6'. Teammate Jason Derry claimed 4th place with a jump of s'B". At Wheeling, Behrend was without triple and long jumper Scott Nicklas. Nicklas will be out for the remainder of the season due to a major ankle sur- gery. However, Jason Derry stepped up and took a fourth place in the triple jump and a seventh in the long jump. Steve Duda took a fifth in the jav elin throw at the meet. Duda hurled the javelin a distance of 142'09". The women's team also put up good numbers in defiance of the bad weather. Kathy Perry ran the steeplechase for the women with a time of 14:13.03. Perry set a new school record in the event. Her efforts also earned her a third place at the meet. Philly Gonzalez also excelled in Wheeling. Gonzalez took a second in the high jump and a seventh in the long jump. Her performance led all Behrend jumpers at Wheeling. Lynn Herrmann threw her javelin 94’01. 25" to take a fourth place in the javelin event, and the Behrend women finished sixth place in the pole-vault ing event by soaring over a 6’6” thresh hold. The Lions will continue their sea son on April 15 at the Rochester Invi tational and will attend the Slippery Rock Invitational on the 22nd. PAGE 12
