PA HE GE 4B T BEHREND BEACON DECEMBER 10 1999 SPORTS Don't Get Me Started Winning the Heisman: Well it's that time of year again folks. Time to look back on the college football season and pre pare for the upcoming howl games during December and January. One of the yearly rituals incorpo rated in this time of reflection is the annual Heisman Trophy pre sentation to take place at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City. Each year one player is selected from the list of nominees who has demonstrated superior athletic ac cornplishments during the current season. This season has produced another crop of fine athletes that will vie for the chance to hold the coveted Heisman trophy. Leading the list is Ron Dayne, running back from Wisconsin, who set the carreer rushing yards Penn State Behrend Pitt-Greensburg Lake Erie Frostburg Penn State Altoona Pitt-Bradford La Roche Behrend 83 La Roche 64 Behrend 40 43 83 La Roche 25 29 64 Behrend Player FG 3-point Henderson 0-0 0-0 Lawrence 6-12 3-4 McKinney 1-1 0-0 Berchtold 3-5 0-0 Dunn 0-2 0-1 1-2 Orris 1-6 1-5 5-6 Dubyak I-I I -1 0-0 Hughes 6-8 ((-0 4-5 Keith 5-10 1-5 (1-0 , Stritzinger 1-2 0-0 0-0 2 Park 3-5 0-0 1 -2 7 Lysn 4-6 0-0 2-2 10 Totals 31-58 6-IS 15-20 82 Assists: 20, Rebounds . 40, Blocks: 2, Steals: 10, TO: I I La Roche FG I-II 3-4 1-4 I-6 10-21 Lodovico Williams Kirschner 4-6 0-0 3-5 11 Assists: 6, Rebounds: 41, Blocks: 2, Steals: 2, TO: 19 * n 1 id like .... ou , r, l , gitog f icon w depart ~, athletic Ira n,,,,i .. ,' , „jail ram' t ,e 1 tespe, i , 7 I i 1 .._ ass is i rtir n g for their ia'''' vi .i.'' Dayne surpassed Ricky Williams, last year's Heisman trophy winner and eventual first overall pick in the NFL draft, for the rushing record. Also included on the list of Heisman candidates are Tom Brees, quarterback from Purdue, and Michael Vick, quar terback from the undefeated Virgina Tech Hokies. Even though these play ers are formidable candidates, it would be a crime not to give the trophy to Dane. But the question is, should Dane look forward to receiving the Heisman trophy? I say this because many of the athletes who have won the Heisman in recent history have been vast under achievers in the NFL. Or in other words they are busts. Let's take a couple of recent winners and rate their performances in order to prove the theory of the Heisman jinx. For the majority of the sea son he has been injured and when he has played, his performances have been far from stellar. This isn't something you would expect out of a Heisman trophy winner, or is it? Several other Heisman flops come to mind from recent years. He entered a Lions organi zation that was struggling to compete with the powerhouses of the NFC and which put too much pressure on the young quarterback to excel. While on the other hand, Peyton Manning entered an organization that is led by arguably the best general manager in the game, Bill Polian, who already has the Colts on track to becoming the next NFL dynasty. MELO So why io these play !rs who have o much promise fall out of fame a few short years af- ter enter- So what does this say about the Heisman? Well, not much except for the fact that the trophy doesn't secure instant success in the NFL. Rather it's merely a piece of hardware to put on the mantle. Hell if you really wanted to buy one I think 0.
