Events BEHREND RUGBY CLUB INFORMATIONAL MEETING There will be an informational meeting on November 22, 1999, at 5:00 p.m. in Reed 3 concerning the formation of a rugby club here at Be hrend. Rugby is a fast-paced physical sport involving 15 athletes competing for two 40-minute halves. The sport has similarities to football as well as soc- cer, with continuous action, no for ward passing and no padding for the players. Rugby can be played by people of any size or speed and ev eryone is welcome to come out to this meeting to learn more about the sport. Thomas Benson, a speaker from NASA, will speak at Behrend on Monday, November 22, at 7 p.m. in Reed 117. Described as "unique" and "bril liant" by reviewers, Andrea Barrett's writing transforms science from "hard and known fact into malleable, strange, and thrilling fictional mate rial." She is the author of the recently acclaimed novel, The Voyage of the Narwhal, and her collection of short fiction, Ship Fever, received the 1996 National Book Award. Barrett currently teaches in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. We discussed commit tee activity and parliamentary procedure. Currently, SGA committees include:Radio Station Committee is working on establishing an on-line radio station for Behrend and they meet Mondays 2 p.m. in Reed 113 or call VP George Leshnock at x 0598. Web Page Committee has hired two webmasters to build a student-oriented Behrend Web page. We desperately need a cool name for this page""' If you have any ideas, stop by the SGA office, call or accost a senator or SGA member. We have been meeting with these two fellows to discuss how the page should look, what should he on the page and other cool stuff. No web experience necessary. If you are interested in giving input, meetings are Tuesdays at 10 a.m. in Reed 112. Call George for more information (x 0598). Transportation/ Technology Fee Committee is in charge of figuring out where all of those extra fees go. Each of us pays $lOO a year toward technology, plus an additional fee for "transporta tion" (i.e., the Blue Bus). This committee voices student concerns for what should be done with this money. Currently being discussed: faster connections, a T-3, and extended Blue Bus service. Concerning the Blue Bus, if you are a coin muter without reliable transportation, we would love to know where you are and how the Blue Bus could better serve your needs! After Thanksgiving break there will he a free pizza event (somewhere obvious in Reed) on Dec. Ist, 1-2 p.m. The following week, Monday the 6th, there will be a Student Forum in the evening. Keep an eye out for signs as the event gets closer. At our last meeting, the International Student Organization (ISO)'s constitution was voted in, so they are officially a new club! Congratulations! Itt;()im'w it,l'iitffe At the Nov. 15 meeting, several topics were discussed. The main topics were "Angel gifts for kids" and the Wish- A-Thon. We have two boys ages 7 and 12 to shop for. We were given their sizes along with a few desired gifts. A group of us will go shopping for these items in the near future. If you would like to join us on the shopping trip, feel free to let us know and we will give you the day and time we are going. We will also need to get together to wrap the gifts and we may have a small gift wrapping party to accomplish this. From now until Dec. 10 we will be selling our stress balls in front of Bruno's from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. If anyone would like to help sell them we would greatly appreci ate it. Thanks to Melissa for getting all the needed materials to make them. Also thanks to all of those who made them last week, we appreciate your help. The Wish-A-Thon was discussed in great detail at the meeting. The actual dance will last from 8 p.m.-8 a.m. in the Reed Commons. We will need everyone's help from now and until the day after the event. We need to start calling and asking for donations of time, money, prizes and other needed supplies. It you have any connections to anyone that might be able to help, please let someone in the office know. We will need everyone's help in making this a great Commuter Council event. Also, don't forget that on Dec. 10, we will have coffee and cookies in the Reed Commons for everyone to enjoy before they head off to take their finals.
