The days for actually making a realistic Super Bowl prediction are over. It slowly started last sea son with the Atlanta Falcons shocking the NFC, and the trend has exploded this season. Three years ago, I could say with confi dence that the Green Bay Pack ers were the team to heat. Four years ago, I could bet on San Fran cisco. And earlier this decade. I just figured the Bills would make it to the show, and lose. But now, there are no guaran- 1999-2000 Men's Basketball Schedule 1999-2000 Women's Basketball Schedule Opponent Hilbert @ Washington & Jeff Nov. 20 Nov. 23 Nov. 29 Dec. 1 Dec. 4 Dec. 8 Dec. 11 Dec. 27-28 Elmira @ Grove City D'Youville La Roche @ Penn State Altoona @Lady of Magic Tourney Daytona, FL Grove City Thiel Jan. 4 Jan. 8 1() Jan. 12 Jan. 15 Jan. 19 Jan. 22 Jan. 26 Jan. 29 Feb. 2 Feb. 5 Feb. 8 Feb. 12 Feb. 16 Feb. 19 Feb. 23,25,26 Fredonia Pitt-Bradford @ Thiel Frostburg @ Pitt-Greensburg Lake Erie @ La Roche Penn State Altoona @ Pitt-Bradford @ St. John Fisher @ Frostburg Pitt-Greensburg @ Lake Erie AMCC Tournament Bounds y of K.... 4 team is headed to Atlanta for Super Bowl XXXIV. At first, the confusion was quite amusing. It was funny to see the Rams jump to 6-0, leaving the 49ers in their path. And it seemed pretty strange to see Denver totally fall apart in the absense of just one player. But now the joke is going too far. It was fun. But now it's just frustrating. The Dolphins then lose to the Bills after that. Yes, the same Bills that are tied for fourth in their division, with a 7-3 record. Then there's the NFC. The Cow boys lose to the Colts, beat the Redskins and Packers, but just can't get past Philadelphia. Minnesota is the only team that is actually playing to their expectations. But they still trail the Lions in the NFC Central. No Packers. No Bucs. Just the Lions that couldn't win with Barry Sanders, but beat the Rams without him. The same Rams that have the whole package of an offense and a defense. Yet they don't have any players that had big names entering the season. It might just be that the NFL wants a new look going into the new millenium. And with the quarterbacks that are leading teams right now, that might be the case. These names don't quite seem to stand up to the Elways, Youngs, Favres, Cunninghams, Aikmans and Marinos of years past, but this might be a com pletely new era in the NFL. Every week last season, football fans waited for the Atlanta Falcons to fall apart. After all, there's always a team that starts the season with a surprising record, then collapses when the pressure gets to be too much. When the NFC Championship game rolled around and the Falcons were still flying high, I began to won der. And when they advanced to the Super Bowl, I gave in, making them my Super Bowl prediction. Much to my dismay, that was the week the Fal cons took their nose dive. I refuse to pick the Rams as a Super Bowl contender and I surely won't pick the Seahawks as the team to beat in the AFC. But who do you chose? In other sports, it's easy. There is always that team that knows how to win. They find ways to win when it looks like they won't. The Yan kees are notorious for being clutch, so when the Yanks put together a good team, you can bet they are going to the Series. When the Chi cago Bulls resigned all their play ers in 1996 and 1997, it was easy to say they would find a way to win. Even when the Packers entered the 1996-97 season, people saw the po tential. Favre and his offense were a gutsy squad combined with the defense Reggie White ministered to. So how do you pick them'? Do 1 . 4 rir; r Bowl Championship Series Ratings Team Rankings Record I. Or do you continue to wait for those teams to fall apart? Either way, don't hold your breath, because the NFL is headed in a new direction. The expansion teams that are enter ing the league continue to stretch the talent throughout the league. This does lessen the overall talent of teams, but it does make for a confusing and chaotic league, where your guess is as good as mine as to who will be on top when January rolls around. This week, it looks like the Rams and Seahawks. Next week? Maybe the Lions and Colts. I won't fall into that trap of small-name teams in the big time game. It's going to be the Vi kings and Jaguars. I think. 44 ' I) Jri W L T Miami 7 2 0 Indianapolis 7 2 0 Buffalo 7 3 0 New England 6 3 0 N.Y.
