NOVEMBER 19 1999 THE BEHREND BEACON PAGE 1 SPORTS Behrend lacrosse club looks to spring season by Craig Hazelwood assistant sports editor The Behrend lacrosse club finished their fall exhibition season with a fi nal record of 2-3. The team recently competed in the West Virginia Univer sity tournament on November 13-14. in Behrend's first game came against Slippery Rock, Behrend midfielder Keith Jensen set the tempo of the game, scoring seconds after the face off. The men jumped to a quick 3-0 lead and controlled the rest of the game. They went on to win 5-4. The final four goals were scored by attackmen - one each for Mark Schilloni and Rob Smith and two by Bryan Colligan. The lacrosse team's next game came against host WVU. Behrend played very well, but couldn't find the net. WVU won 3-0. In this game the de fense stepped up, but the offense fal tered. The men played Kentucky in its last game. At the half Behrend led 1-0. The second half was all Ken tucky, who won the game 5-1. The lone Behrend goal was scored by attackman Chauncey Hartwig. Kentucky played a very physical game that Behrend was not expecting. The team had to step up its intensity to match Kentucky's. Defensemen Josh Goetz and Ryan Averill answered the call and challenged the entire team to play a more physical game. Defenseman Keith Sneed stated, "It's rough out there, if you can't take the hits stay off the grass." Goalie Mike May was quite possi bly the best goalie in the tournament. He looked very impressive in net, but faced too many shots. May looked solid, he seems to be improving with each game he plays. The Behrend lacrosse club will re sume play at the end of March.
